The 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 5 in. Random Orbit Sander (model XOB01T) delivers increased efficiency and mobility to woodworkers. The XOB01T features 3 speed settings, superior ergonomics and up to 40-minutes of run time on a single charge. Match the speed to the application with 3 speed settings (7,000/9,500/11,000 OPM), which are easily changed with a 1-touch electronic control switch. The large 1/8 in. random orbit action is engineered for efficient sanding, fast material removal, and a swirl-free finish. The pad brake reduces free-spin for improved overall finish, and a control system regulates pad speed at start-up. The XOB01T uses quick-change 5 in. (8-hole) hook-and-loop abrasive paper for increased versatility. For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita created Star Protection Computer Controls. Star Protection is communication technology that allows the Star Protection-equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the tool can also be powered by Makita 18-Volt LXT and Compact Lithium-Ion batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating Star Protection inside.

I use the Makita platform due to in my opinion the best batteries out there, this is a great sander, I used it with the 5.0a and got to prepare my steel handrail which was well away from power or air, this little sander was exceptional!!!

Overall this is a great sander. The variable settings are nice. However this is a power hog and you will burn though batteries like crazy using it! Minus one star for poor battery efficiency.
