I recently acquired the Makita XPS01PT Kit (includes the XPS01, a 55T carbide tip ultra-thin-kerf (0.63″/1.6mm) blade, two 5 Ah 18V batteries and a high-speed charger in two blue-green systainer-like containers), and it came with the 55″ rail and 2 more 5Ah batteries for free (a promotion). That is significantly less than the cost of a Festool TSC-55 and comparable supporting gear. (The XPS01PT kit is missing a dust bag, and there seems to be no Makita-brand dust bag accessory available at this point. The Makita XPS01 is compatible with the Mafell dust bag (Mafell 206921).)I have and love my Festool TS-75. (Festool swapped the TS-75 for my TS-55 REQ that was recalled in 2013.)The Makita’s dust collection ability when connected to my Festool CT/Mini dust collector is adequate, but it’s a bit more messy than the TS-75. (A bit of duct tape over the arbor access hole might help if this turns out to be a problem.) The dust port on the Makita is directly compatible with the CT/Mini’s hose without any need for an adapter. The other issue with dust collection is that since the Makita is battery operated, the dust collector needs to be manually operated. (The Makita XPS01 doesn’t have a wireless dust control feature. A new model XPS02 does have Bluetooth dust collector control.)The Makita rail is almost the same as the Festool rails. I have 55″ and 75″ Festool rails, Parallel Guides*, and an MFT/3. The two brands of rails are functionally cross-compatible — the Festool saws will work on the Makita rails, and the Makita saws will work on the Festool rails. The Makita rails have an additional locking edge that works with the Makita saw’s slide lever. (*The Festool Parallel Guides do not work with the Makita rail. The lip for the locking slide lever on the slot of the Makita rail obstructs the clamps on the Parallel Guides.)As delivered, the Makita’s blade was set to cut about 1/16th inch closer than my TS-75. Unaltered the Makita would trim all my three existing Festool rails too close for the TS-75. So I needed to adjust the Makita to match the cut location of my TS-75. (Alternatively, I could have adjusted the TS-75 to match the Makita blade distance.) This required adjusting the four hinge block mounting screws on the Makita to set its blade to match my guide rails (which are trimmed to my TS-75). (The Makita has these screws on the underside of the saw base.) This took a little trial and error. The Makita has no riving knife. So kickback potential is greater. But the Makita does have a locking slide lever which can be used only on a Makita rail, and it will hold the saw on the track or prevent it from falling over when doing bevel cuts.The Makita also lacks the splinter guard on the waste side of the cut that the Festool saws have for 0-degree cuts. But cuts with Makita saw have been very clean.The Makita XPS01 comes with a 165mm blade compared to the TS-55’s 160mm blade. They both have the same 20mm arbor. This gives the Makita a little bit more cut depth. Those silly little mm’s make all the difference when cutting 2-by lumber where the TS-55 comes up just short when making a bevel cut from the rail.I have not located a source for replacement blades that match the one supplied with the cordless Makita XPS01. (Makita B-57071 55T ultra-thin-kerf.) The wider thin-kerf blade that comes with the corded Makita SP6000K (Makita B-07353) is readily available. Freud, Tenryu, Oshlun, Festool and others sell 160mm blades that will work in the XPS01. I have a 48T thin-kerf (0.87″/2.2mm) Freud blade that I bought when I had the TS-55 REQ, but I have not tried it in the XPS01. The Makita XPS01 is nicely made, performs well and is an excellent value.

Review from an active DIYer:Quick Review:Great saw, The dust collection worked well that was my main reason for getting a track saw. The splinter guard worked well, eliminates/greatly reduces tearouts. I did not experience any when I used it. The strips on the bottom of the rail creates enough friction to stabilize the track. I did not use any clamps and the track did not move while I made my cuts Cons: This loses a star for me for 2 reasons. 1)The depth guide is in CM’s instead of inches so that can be a bother if you want to quickly adjust it in the US. 2)The cases that hold the saw and the battery charger are flimsy. Feel like they can break rather easily. They do not compare to the packouts, Tstaks, and Ridgid boxes from other brands, but they get the job done.Also FYI regardless of what brand you buy ,the blades for a plunge saw are pretty expensive, around $45+. The arbor for plunge saws are 20mm or .787″ whereas regular 6 1/2 circular saws have an arbor of 5/8″ or .625″ More In Depth:I was looking at a cordless tracksaw mainly due to the fact that they are the only cordless circular saws that I’ve seen, that have a dustport. Breathing in all that dust is healthy. So I figured I’d get a track saw to solve that problem. Even though I am heavily invested in Dewalt, I opted for the Makita because of the special promotion. Prior to this I did not have any Makita Tools, they were the last major brand that I did not have, 4 batteries and a free guide rail seemed too good to pass up. I have been researching a lot of Makita’s products and wanted to get on board due to their commitment to eliminating dust in the area. A lot of the tools they have a dust port and I do not see that option with other brands. The saw worked fine. The charger charged both of the batteries simultaneously and it took about 45minutes out of the box. The splinter guard did a good job of reducing tearout. There are nobs on the saw that will attach it to the rail so the saw will not come off the track if you do angled cuts. I attached my Ridgid shopvac to the dustport, the connection was loose but that is a simple fix, just buy the proper adapter but even with the loose fitting I collected most of the dust from the saw

Certain things not quite to the festool quality, like the insert in the case, this is just a cheap plastic tray instead of molded foam, and no dust collection bag. But saw is a great value and the motor and batteries have great power! Would absolutely recommend.

It cut right at the edge of the anti-splinter strip. Doing bevel cuts are just as accurate. The saw cut as smooth as you’d expect from this brand however it is suprisingly light in your hand.The plunge action pivots the blade into a plunge cut on an arc from a pivot point near base at the rear of the saw. You do have to keep a little forward pressure when plunge cutting and take it slow or it will kick back. Occasionally the plunge area is slightly off from the rest of the cutting.Dust collection is on par with the collector you use and using a collection unit will save on blade life.Be careful when using other blades than Makita or DeWalt.Makita and DeWalt use 165mm blades, most other track saws use 160mmCheck to see that the arbor is 20mm and the blade is 165mm
