The string trimmer is ideal for precision trimming and edging. It features an efficient Makita BL Brushless Motor for longer run time, increased power and speed and longer tool life. The kit includes an efficient charger and an 18-Volt LXT 4.0 Ah battery which reaches a full charge in only 40-minutes the fastest charge-time in the category for less downtime and increased productivity. The efficient brushless motor delivers up to 6,000 RPM for faster cutting. The XRU12SM1 is equipped with Automatic Torque Drive Technology, which automatically shifts from 4,000-6,000 RPM depending on the density of the application. There are 3-speed options (4,000/5,000/6,000 RPM), allowing users to match the speed to the application. The easy-loading bump-and-feed trimmer head is compatible with 0.08 in. or 0.095 in. line and offers reverse rotation allowing users to quickly clear the head of entangled grass and weeds. The XRU12SM1 features Makita Extreme Protection Technology (XPT). XPT is a protective seal inside the tool and is engineered for improved operation in harsh conditions by channeling water and dust from key internal components. This trimmer was easy to assemble and has plenty of power. Our old cheap trimmer took 2 batteries ( if they were fairly new and you were quick) to trim a one acre lot. This trimmer does it on a half a battery. I would give it five stars but the string shield is far too small. The old trimmer covered half the circle that the string turns in. Over the winter I’ll take the guard off the old trimmer and put it on this new one. I also liked the idea that the battery on this trimmer will work on most all their other tools.

It is very difficult to angle correctly to get the “best” results. Appears to have been designed to be used by a tall or maybe average sized (man) and not someone short. I am a 5′ woman and have to hold it way down rather than use the handle and so don’t think it cuts as neatly as I was expecting. Expensive and not worth the money for me. Disappointed.
