The string trimmer is ideal for precision trimming and edging. It features an efficient Makita BL Brushless Motor for longer run time, increased power and speed and longer tool life. The kit includes an efficient charger and an 18-Volt LXT 4.0 Ah battery which reaches a full charge in only 40-minutes the fastest charge-time in the category for less downtime and increased productivity. The efficient brushless motor delivers up to 6,000 RPM for faster cutting. The XRU12SM1 is equipped with Automatic Torque Drive Technology, which automatically shifts from 4,000-6,000 RPM depending on the density of the application. There are 3-speed options (4,000/5,000/6,000 RPM), allowing users to match the speed to the application. The easy-loading bump-and-feed trimmer head is compatible with 0.08 in. or 0.095 in. line and offers reverse rotation allowing users to quickly clear the head of entangled grass and weeds. The XRU12SM1 features Makita Extreme Protection Technology (XPT). XPT is a protective seal inside the tool and is engineered for improved operation in harsh conditions by channeling water and dust from key internal components. For years I used an electric grass trimmer and dealt with a cord , but after that machine finally died I did some research and decided on the Makita, which has proved to be a very good investment. Running the trimmer at its lowest speed allows enough time for the user to trim the edges on the tree and garden beds on the entire property. I have not used it in extremely tall grass or tough underbrush; that’s not an issue here, this is an easy tool to use, and the use of the harness is recommended for a long trim time to save one’s shoulders and arms from fatigue. A nice investment.

Lightweight, strong battery. We have a small yard, 1/10th acre with a fence in the back. Battery lasted through the first use for trimming, and halfway through the next trimming 2 weeks later with no recharging in between. Assembly was fairly simple – pay attention when attaching the head with the string to ensure you get the tool inserted properly to hold the axle steady while screwing on the head. It didn’t seem to do right when I initially assembled it, and the head came spinning off in the first 10 minutes of use, but I ‘felt’ the difference when reattaching the head when the tool slid into the correct hole. I really really like how quiet it is, easy to operate, effective on the mid-level density of grass and weeds that grow up around the fence, and we now have a spare battery and charger for our other Makita products.
