Built using some design cues from Apple’s aluminum keyboards, the gold Wireless Aluminum Keyboard from Matias is a wireless Bluetooth keyboard that can pair up to four Mac, iPad, iPhone, Windows, or Android devices, each of which may be switched between with the press of a button. Unlike Apple’s wireless keyboard, this version contains a numeric keypad, and the ability of the function keys to control screen brightness, volume, and more has also been retained. For those who need to switch the function keys back to their original duties, there’s even an Fn key for doing that.
Unlike other wireless keyboards, which often power down and disconnect to conserve battery life, Matias’ offering has been built with a 1600 mAh lithium-ion polymer battery that stays powered on and connected to your system. Its battery lasts for up to one year, with 533 to 1,600 hours of uninterrupted typing time, and up to two years of standby time. Included with this wireless keyboard is a USB charging cable and a limited 1-year warranty.

I posted a review about six weeks ago that stated the keyboard stopped working after about a year. I since contacted Matias support. They sent me instructions on how to reset the keyboard. After doing this, the keyboard works fine again. I’ve been using it without problems now for several weeks. So, overall review: I love the keyboard, I love the size, the feel, the physical design of it. I think the backlight turns off a bit too early. I’m not sure how normal it is for the keyboard to stop operating after a year, but apparently it can be reset back to normal operation. I’ll continue to use mine, hopefully it will continue to work as normal.

I have been hunting around for a new keyboard because I wanted to have a spare since Apple no longer makes the aluminum keyboard (yes you can still find them), but I also was interested in retiring the KVM I had been using. I knew choosing a keyboard was going to be very difficult because I am ridiculously picky. I looked at a number of mechanical keyboards, some costing upward of $200 plus. A friend was also looking for a replacement keyboard for his Logitech that died. We had chatted about the Matias and he ended up purchasing one. He absolutely loved it, so I decided to give it a go as well. Yes, it really is about as close to the Aluminum Apple keyboard (wired) you can get. The keys are slightly lighter (requires less pressure to actuate), but the keys feel nice. I had no problems pairing the keyboard with several Macs and an iPhone. I suspect I could connect the keyboard to my KVM with a BT module and have eight devices, but that would be silly, but tempting. 🙂 Overall, this is a very nice keyboard, but of course, choosing a keyboard is really personal, so your millage may vary.

I thought this would be better than LogiTech K750 keyboard for my Mac. Unfortunately, this loses bluetooth connection periodically. Also the keys seem to be closer together compared to LogiTech K750.

I bought this as an alternative to Apple’s own. While the keyboard looks great, its function is less than desirable. First, the keys are too close together compared to other keyboards like LogiTech’s K780 or K811, which are much better than Matias. Second the keys must be pressed almost directly in the middle to register. There are many times I had to go back and edit documents because the key did not register. I never had this many problems with LogiTech’s or Apple’s keyboards. I would NOT recommend this keyboard. Spend a little more and get Apple keyboard or spend less and get LogiTech K780

Same problems as MBP 2016 keyboard. The keys simply die. The Return key died first.

This Matias model of keyboard was barely ever used. After less than two hours of total use, it malfunctioned so badly that keystrokes were no longer being interpreted correctly. Simple ‘A’ and ‘S’ keypresses were suddenly being sent to Macs as command and control key combinations. At the same time, some center keys were not impacted.

Hi, For some reason it did not work with my PC. I tried to reach out to Matias and got no response. Regards Prem

Better than a lot of keyboards out there, but not quite yet to apple hardware standards. If you are going to compete with Apple you have to beat their prices (and that is the easy part!!) but you also have to match their quality standards, ad as a long time apple products consumer I can easily tell you that you are not there yet; keep working on it though, its easy, just copy their design and match the quality and mechanics of the hardware!!!
