   Mayhew 1/8 in. to 1-3/16 in. Imperial Hollow Punch Set (16-Piece) is top of the line. Its a no frills well designed punch. It has a variety of punches and the tool stores in a simple plastic case. The cutters are well done as is the tool that is a solid one-piece mandrill that holds up to two cutters firmly and can take solid taps, if necessary. The mandrill for the smallest cutters have a threaded connection and the other cutters are secured with a bayonet connection. The business end are the cutters and you can see Mayhew took extra care with them. They are thin walled and cut cleanly. The cutters looked machined and I was surprised to read they are made of molded Polypropylene from the product description These to me feel like thin walled metal cutters.I used the cutters on different materials: cork, rubber, leather and asbestos sheets. I have a wooden end block as backing and used a mallet to tap some of them. The cork was the easiest and produced the best gaskets. The other material worked too, but required more effort. Its for use with softer materials and isn’t for harder metals. Its important not to dull or nick the cutters as they do all the work. What I really liked in using double cutters with this tool is its self-centering, no misalignment when working. Some other mandrills use a center punch which has to be lined up when using one cutter at a time in succession that make up the gasket. This can make it go slower and you don’t always get it right. With Mayhew’s design the gasket come out spot on aligned.As I said its all well done, the set is made in France, not China for a change. This is a good set to have in the shop when the need comes up for those impossible to find the right size gaskets. For those who need gaskets making your own is just a necessity at times and this set is really easy to use for that purpose.

   This is a quality punch set in an attractive and durable case.Anyone who has had to make a gasket will appreciate the quality and workmanship in this set. It makes perfect holes in everything I have used it on- even some sheet metal. This tool is not intended for use on heavy gauge metal though.Because you can mount two cutters at once you can also use it to make washers. No more having having to stop work because your washer bin lacks the right size.No instructions came with the set, perhaps because people likely to use this specialist tool probably know its limitations.As with all such tools, they have to be used carefully if you want them to last long. Unfortunately this means that the manufacturers normal warranty does not apply to this set.
