Install the 32-bit Windows 10 Home operating system from Microsoft on your notebook or desktop to enhance it with a hybrid Start Menu, Microsoft Edge web browser, and Cortana personal assistant. Without leaving the Windows desktop to access your apps, the hybrid Start Menu in Windows 10 Home looks similar to the menu in Windows 7 and combines it with the live tiles used in Windows 8’s Start Screen. The Start Menu has been enlarged to include these tiles, which can let you view how many email messages you have, the current weather status, and more. In addition to the live tiles, you still have enough room on the Start Menu to pin your most frequently used apps and files. Built with the strengths of Windows 7 and Windows 8, Windows 10 Home combines the best features of both engines to remain compatible with nearly all your peripherals and the computer’s internal components. Furthermore, it offers a similar design to the previous version of Windows, so you can easily start using Windows 10 Home right away.
The web browser included with Windows 10 Home is Microsoft Edge. This browser lets you write or type notes directly on webpages and share them with others. You can save your favorite websites for offline access as well as read online articles free of distractions by displaying only what you want to see in a Reading view mode. With Cortana integrated in Microsoft Edge, you can highlight a word on a webpage and have Cortana run a search and display the results in a mini window. Not just a part of your browser, Cortana is integrated into Windows 10, and she can can guide you to your answer by searching the Internet, Help menu, apps, files, and settings. You can also use Cortana to verbally record a task into her Notebook, where she keeps track of what you like and what you want her to do.
Utilizing Windows 10 Home’s Continuum feature on a 2-in-1 convertible notebook allows you to switch back a forth between tablet and notebook mode. When you only want to use the display’s touchscreen feature in tablet mode, Continuum changes the layout of the Windows 10 desktop screen and the apps go full screen, so you can easily use your fingers to perform actions and tap your selections. Additionally, it is designed to connect all your Windows 10 devices together with universal apps. These apps provide the same features whether you are working on a desktop computer in the office or finishing the task using a Windows 10-compatible smartphone while commuting back home.
Microsoft has redesigned the Setting menu within Windows 10 Home to make it easier for you to customize your system’s settings, such as Devices, Network & Internet, Accounts, and more. On the bottom right of the taskbar, you get an action center icon that expands to display your important notifications from your apps and Windows 10 Home. You also have quick access to frequently used settings and apps, so you can turn on your computer’s Bluetooth or adjust the screen’s brightness level without having to go through the entire menu.
Another feature of Windows 10 Home is the ability to neatly snap up to four applications side by side so you can clearly view the content. In addition to this, you can create multiple virtual desktop workspaces that contain different apps pertaining to your work or entertainment. Included along with Windows 10 Home are apps such as Maps, Photos, Mail & Calendar, Music, Video, and the Windows Store for additional content.
Please note that the System Builder version of Windows 10 Home is tied to the first computer you install it on, specifically to the motherboard. This means you cannot transfer the license to another computer (purchase the Retail version for this option). The System Builder version also does not come with free support from Microsoft and cannot be used to upgrade from an older version of Windows.

Microsoft & B&H took over a week to send me a code while other companies are instantaneous. Ridiculously long for a single code.

I had to try to 3 computers to get the Windows 10 download tool to recognize a SanDisk USB stick. The tool could not find any usb stick, but windows 7 could. Nice, MS! Anyway, that was the hardest part. I put the usb stick into a brand-new, home-built PC using usb 2.0 port. Turned on PC and Gigabyte motherboard found the stick, installed win10, and I entered the key that B&H emailed to me almost immediately after purchase. I was testing early versions of win10 at work, and my initial impression was that I would be a win7 or bust person. MS has made a lot of improvements to win10 to make the jump from win7 more palatable. I game a lot, and even games that are 10 years old are able to run on it right from Steam (this is not a blanket statement; read the forums to see if your game will run on win10). Stability is very nice. I built my machine over xmas break, so I haven’t been inconvenienced by auto windows updates yet; that may change now that MS is back to work in the new year. If so, I will update my review. Things I really hate: – Cortana. Even when you turn it off, it still tries to get you to interact with it. (If Cortana were a human, it would be a stalker.) – Program files are listed in alpha order in a loooong, hard-to-read list. It’s VERY difficult to find anything compared to Start Program Files in win7. – Win10, like Win7 does not properly index portable HDDs. Whenever you plug a portable HDD back into Win10, it takes a long time for the list to propagate in explorer, when it should just remember that device. – I hate big stupid tiles in the start menu, especially when program icons do not scale up to fill the tiles as they would for hi-dpi. So you see a little icon in the big tile. It just screams Win8 which I thought we all agreed was a mistake and are still awaiting apology from MS. – I think OEM Home is really expensive (& there are ads!) and the jump to Pro is far too high. The black market for pirated Win10 licenses is so prevalent in the US.

I don’t like Microsoft trying to force you into everything Microsoft but it works most the time.

B&H Photo delivered this item promptly. There were no instructions but after reviewing there really wasn’t any needed. I popped the disc in my drive and it walked me through the upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 in a matter of about 1-1/2 hrs. I couldn’t be happier with the ease of this install.

The PC I was building did not have a DVD drive so I used the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB flash drive. The license key from this DVD product was used and posed no problems during installation and activation.

What can I say? I expected Windows 10 within a week, and thats what I got… about 8 bucks cheaper than elsewhere, considering the lack of tax. No complaints! 🙂

Not very impressed overall. Feels like an overgrown smartphone OS. No native Bluray player is very annoying.

It’s Windows 10 what more can you say. I don’t like how Microsoft adds all the garage like sugar rush and forces Cortana on you. The Windows 10 updates seem to be bug laden. My Start menu will stop working randomly and Microsoft removed the troubleshooter for this issue. The Windows updates change settings without asking. It works most the time and I’m not going to Mac, Linux, or a Chromebook.

Overpriced, but the key worked!

Windows 10 is a great update for Microsoft. You should really get it if you can.

I needed to install Windows 10 on a 15 MBPr with Bootcamp. The download means you can safely backup the file in multiple locations unlike a single DVD-ROM that can become damaged or lost. Installing on my Mac was a breeze when following Bootcamp Assistant instructions to copy to a USB Flash Drive along with Apple’s Windows drivers. Even if you’re building an OEM Windows computer, the download offers greater flexibility than dealing with a DVD-ROM.
