Performance is not sacrificed despite lower peak torque due to its Longer Sustained Torque that allows the tool to complete core users most common applications. The POWERSTATE Brushless Motor delivers up to 0 RPM-3,000 RPM with constant power output to drive screws faster. Built-in REDLINK PLUS intelligence is the most advanced electronic system on the market, preventing damage to the user’s tool and battery caused by overloading or overheating. The cordless impact driver is compatible with all Milwaukee M12 REDLITHIUM Compact Batteries or Extended Capacity Batteries, delivering users with more work per charge and more work over the life of the pack than competitive batteries. This tool will outdrive most 18V competitors. Has a little weight to it and needs to for the impact mechanism. Try using it to disassemble an engine and when 30+ impacts hit to loosen a bolt watch the reduction in broken bolts. Just set proper and use in right direction.

The surge is a quiet compact impact. If I had to complain it would be to improve the led light to a 3 light. For dark areas you have a shadow right on top of your target.

This is the 1st impact driver I have had. I have always used drills for driving screws. I framed a workshop with screws and will probably never use a standard drill to drive more than 3 screws again. This thing is light, battery life is great and it makes driving screws easy on the body and drastically reduces stripped screws. Love it!! Can not believe I went so long not realizing the greatness of an impact driver.

I was excited to have a more compact alternative to my 18v Makita Driver, and the M12 surge certainly is more compact, but my Makita will remain my first choice. Yes, the M12 surge is smoother and quieter, but not by much. Where the M12 surge falls short, however, is in ergonomics. Because the battery is inserted into the handle, this makes the grip too large to be comfortable. Additionally, when using the 2.0 battery, the weight balance is significantly skewed toward the head. The weight imbalance combined with the uncomfortable grip make the tool slightly awkward to use. I’ll be keeping this around for when I need to access to screws in tight quarters, but for everything else, I’ll keep reaching for my Makita 18v as it is much more comfortable to use.

I’ve had M18 cordless drills for decades. The 12 volt surge is small powerhouse. I’ve drilled 1/4 holes in 2×4’s, driven 4 inch long wood screws, installed ceiling fan screws, drilled though drywall for anchor points etc. This tool makes me smile everytime I use it. I wouldnt use it to put a deck together but it’s perfect for small projects around the house and offers more clearance than a standard size cordless drill. I bought the Milwaukee 1/4″ driver and drill assortment kit and it’s perfect. Milwaukee did a great job on the surge! I never owned the older model impact driver so I cant speak to the difference in noise levels but I can say that this tool is not loud indoors or out.
