I would not recommend this for the typical weekend DYI person, but if you use or have a need for a 1/2″ battery powered right angle drill, do yourself a favor and check out this Milwaukee Hole Hawg. It’s beefy! With the addition of two M18 batteries and charger, you will get done whatever you’re aiming to work on. I found the torque speed very comfortable and it did not bog down as I put a little body weight on it. It is heavy with the battery plugged in, but the design, with a trigger handle and passive handle for the other hand, makes the tool extremely manageable. Getting into 16″ OC ceiling areas is a little bit awkward as the weight of the tool and working above your head puts some fatigue on your arms, but I think the torque compensates as I used a worn spade bit. I found this tool to be outstanding. Very, very happy with it. The carry bag it comes in is nylon and large. Nothing special about it other than it will carry more than the Hole Hawg, batteries, etc. with ease.

This review is for the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Hole Hawg 1/2 in. Cordless Right Angle Drill High Demand 9.0Ah Kit, Model # 2707-22HD; since Milwaukee makes a number of Hole Hawg drills it’s important to know the exact model that you’re looking at.Milwaukee Tool’s motto is “Nothing But Heavy Duty” and this drill lives up to that motto; it’s a serious tool for serious work. Fit and finish are outstanding. The 2707-22HD is designed and built with the needs of professional electricians in mind. I’m not an electrician, I’m a home DIY and a semi-retired I.T. technician, but I was granted an opportunity to try one of the Hole Hawgs out. Since I.T. involves installing data cables sometimes the tools and methods used by electricians are identical to those used by I.T. techs. This review is from that standpoint. The kit comes with the drill, chuck key, two high capacity batteries, a “quick” charger, and a contractor’s tool bag. Any M18 battery will work in the drill but it is optimized for the new 9.0 a.h. batteries. Of course the batteries that come with the drill also work in any other Milwaukee M18 tool.I charged one of the batteries in the included “fast” charger and the other in a “regular” M18 charger I already owned. The “fast” charger lived up to its name – it completed the charge a solid 20 minutes before the “regular” charger. The charger will also charge M12 batteries (simultaneously), which is a nice feature. See attached photo for comparison between the 9.0 battery and the ‘standard’ M18 battery. The contractor’s bag measures 21” long, 12” wide, and 12” deep when the bag is wide open. Of course zipping it closed reduces the depth at the sides. Still, it’s a very large bag – see the photo below of the drill, batteries, and charger in the bag. The bag comes with a detachable shoulder strap and offers 6 external pockets. There are no internal pockets for storage. The 2707-22HD has an “old time” chuck installed, one that requires a key to tighten or loosen. (Milwaukee also makes a “quick release” chuck for a different model of the Hole Hawg). There is a spot on the drill for housing the chuck key when not in use (see attached photo). You can put a lot of clamping force on a bit using the chuck on the 2707-22HD, which is good when you’re running larger hole cutting bits. Milwaukee states that this drill is designed for professionals drilling with augers up to 1-1/4 in. and self-feed bits up to 2 inches. I’ve found no oscillation or run-out on the drill that I’m using – it bores straight and true.Milwaukee claims that the drill can “drill 300 7/8 inch holes on a single charge” and I have no reason to doubt that claim. There are a number of Internet videos showing the Hole Hawg with 9.0 a.h. batteries going through their paces and I’ve seen no one who doesn’t love the new battery. It certainly provides more power than I’m likely to need during a typical cable installation day. Of course, electricians install more wire than I do cable so their needs will be greater. The drill itself is a bit of a beast, coming in at just under 10 pounds without a bit installed. The weight is a good thing, because it helps control the torque of the drill; there is no clutch on this tool, so if the bit binds up the user needs to be prepared to handle the sudden rotation of the drill handle. Milwaukee advises that operators use any available wall studs, etc., as braces so that should the bit get stuck the stud will keep the drill from getting away from the operator. I’ll buy that suggestion – the 9 a.h. batteries put out a lot of power. There is no side handle with this drill; one hand operates the power button and your knuckles are protected by the handle design (see attached photo) while the other hand is used to help control the device via a hand grip on top of the drill. This beast isn’t designed for one handed drilling and feels unbalanced until the battery is installed. Once a battery is installed, though, the drill feels “right”.As always, Milwaukee advises to use proper safety equipment when using this drill and I would heavily advise using proper safety glasses. The drill, of course, offers both forward and reverse using the standard sliding switch in the handle. You can only change direction after the drill comes to a complete stop. Noise level is not noticeably high – I can hear the drill through ear plugs, but it’s not objectionable even without hearing protection. (Although I really don’t like using power tools without hearing protection. YMMV). Vibration is minimal. There is an LED work light built into the handle.Using twist drills and hole saws I’ve found this new Milwaukee offering to be simply outstanding. Of course, drilling is largely a factor of the bits being used – a quality, sharp bit makes drilling easier with any drill. However, the Hole Hawg offers substantial power and the two handed grip adds control. It’s designed for professionals and the market price reflects that – but if your budget allows and you install wiring or cable or tend to help neighbors out with wood deck installations or outbuildings, this drill absolutely rocks. Just be prepared to deal with the neighbors – I showed the drill to the guy next door and I think he’s already planning on asking to borrow it. The drill comes with a 5 year warranty on the tool and a 3 year warranty on the batteries, and of course has the usual 90 return policy from Home Depot.HTHRegards,Jim

Drills holes more efficiently than my corded hawg

This drill is a brute when it comes to drilling holes and it is my most powerful hand held drill. It has the same great ergonomics as all my Milwaukee products. While it is no lightweight, the right angle design lets me work in tight spaces. The distance from the end of the chuck to the back of the handhold is only 7 inches, less than that of my much smaller conventional drill. The angle design moves the main handle far from the drilling axis so it is easy to absorb the generated torque. I have successfully drilled 3/8″ holes in steel angle, the only difficulty is applying enough force by hand to keep the bit cutting rather than just rubbing. I do have a half inch corded drill but this drill far outperforms it. It even does well with my garden augur, letting me drill a 2” pilot hole in the ground in order to add water and soften the clay before finishing the job with a post hole digger. This drill will be used a lot!

I have my trusty hole-hawg from 20 years ago, but it just met its match. The old corded hole hawg is three times as heavy as this tool and it requires an extension cord. I’m a little suspicious, on the whole, when a battery powered tool claims to be able to do as much as its corded cousin, but Milwaukee delivers with this tool. I gave it a tough test by drilling into dry hard maple firewood with a dull 2-1/2″ bit. It didn’t have any trouble.

The 9.0 battery is sensational in any Milwaukee tool. It holds it’s charge for a long time in the toughest of applications. I was drilling though pine 2/4’s with a 2-1/4 inch hole saw (not structural 2/4’s). I was using a standard right angle drill due to space confinement, and the last two holes I drilled were wide open space. The difference in drilling speed was nearly day and night. It was not only a time saver, but less physical fatigue despite the weight of the drill. All the controls are very easy to use, and the handle is easily removed as I needed to do in one tight area. The only drawback at all is tight areas, but worth every penny for heavy hole drilling needs. The 9.0 battery is one to stick with for this tool as heavy drilling does demand the sustained power.

The M18 Hole Hawg is a great drill for electricians and data cable installers. Works well with auger, selfeed, hole saws and flexible installer bits. Has a ton of torque and feels very comfortable to use. The extra high capacity 9.0 batteries that come with this kit should easily get you through the day of rough-in work.In the past few months I’ve been involved in a few projects that involved a lot of boring through framing to run electric or voice, data, video cables in remodeling work as well as new construction. I’ve used 4 different Milwaukee cordless drills in those projects and the best by far has been this M18 Hole Hawg.I’ve used a regular cordless Milwaukee drill on many occassions and that’s very difficult. Not just because of the size and shape but it frequently got bound up and would twist my wrist when it did. I used an M12 right angle drill that did pretty well in new construction if I needed to drill a few small holes 1/2″ or less with little binding. In old construction where wood was denser it bound up very frequently and was slow going but at least it would stop instead of twisting my arm. I also used the big brother of this Hole Hawg, the M18 Super Hawg. That drill is great but is much bigger, heavier and slower.. I included a picture showing different drills for comparison. This M18 Hole Hawg can’t do the big holes like the M18 or corded Super Hawg can but it handles the holes an electrician would typically use for rough-in faster than the M18 Super Hawg and as fast as the corded version but in a smaller, lighter package. One thing that is missing from the larger M18 Super Hawg is the clutch in low gear that handles when the bit binds. On the Hole Hawg there’s no such feature so it’s important to get a good trip on the drill and brace it against framing in case it binds. I haven’t had it bind though. At one of the job sites someone else commented while watching me drill “Wow nothing stops it”.Capacities are up to 5/16″ twist bit in steel, in wood it can handle up to a 1-1/4″ ship auger bit, 2″ selfeed bit, and 4″ hole saw with a max speed of 1,200 RPM.I chose this version with the traditional chuck because I had planned to use flexible installer bits with this as well. The amount of torque the M18 Hole Hawg has makes using installer bits a breeze and the right angle design makes it very comfortable to use in various situations. The design makes it very easy to handle and control. The variable speed trigger controls the speed of the drill smoothly. Kit comes with a soft carry bag with strap, charger and 2 9.0 batteries.I have a number of batteries from Milwaukee and I have been very impressed with how well they perform. I’ve stress tested some putting load on them that killed other brands of lithium ion batteries and they survived. All of my batteries still work fine. These 9.0 batteries have the same great technology but with longer run times.Like the M18 Super Hawg I’m a little disappointing that the center of the chuck is about an 1/8″ deeper than the ideal 1-3/4″ that would have made it ideal for remodeling work because you could get it in the center of a 2×4 stud with drywall removed from only one side while keeping the drill straight. That’s not as big of a deal for the Hole Hawg since it will be used primarily for smaller holes and the main purpose of the drill is for rough-ins. I’ve been able to use it for both new and remodel work and absolutely love it.This is the cordless right angle drill to have if you’re an electrician or cable installer. I love it.

I have had many tools in my life that could put a hole into wood, but nothing like this monster can. Not only does it cut through wood like butter, it does it fast and smoothly. First off, the engineers thought of safety as they placed a handle for us to keep a steady grip while in use. It’s light enough to carry from stud to stud with ease, but heavy enough to keep that added pressure on the wood while boring through it. The build quality is as rugged as any other Milwaukee tool out there, so no worries about it not lasting for many, many years to come. It’s also lighter, BUT STRONGER than the plug in models that I have used. The 9.0 batteries are unbelievably long lasting, and charge extremely fast. For a full charge, it took around 20 minutes. Once it ready to go, it will drill over 300 7/8” holes! The battery charger that this comes with is great. It will allow you to charge you M18 and M12 batteries at the same time. The carrying bag is also well made and large. Many bags only allow you to fit the single tool with some cramming, but this bag is large and will fit the Haw, two batteries, the charger and much, much more. As for using the Hawg, they made it extremely easy. Its set up just like a drill world be, and allows you to go clockwise or counter clockwise when needed. As for how it feels in your hands, they defiantly took ergonomics into consideration, and even with the larger 9.0 batteries, it has the perfect balance. So let’s talk about power. When I say this eats through wood like nothing, I mean it. I my video you will see it going through a pine 2×4 like nothing, but I also tried this on oak and it worked just as well. There is no bogging down of the Hawg at all, and it really does make the holes quickly and accurately. It also has an built in LED light that will keep those dim areas lit while working. I can tell you that I have never drilled a hole with such ease in my life. This Hawg is absolutely amazing, and could not see how the pros could use anything else but this. With the Hawg, bag, two 9.0 batteries and a duel charger, this is a great buy, and I am blown away with its performance.
