I received this drill for free for the purpose of reviewing.Over the years, I have lived in two older masonry homes where you need to drill holes in bricks for everything from hanging pictures to cabinets. Even in our latest frame house I still find myself drilling into the concrete in the garage floor.I started off with a standard drill with the hammer option. That was a total waste of time and money. I burned through bits every couple of holes and each hole took way too long to drill. For a while I rented drills, but that got expensive and annoying. Finally I got a Corded SDS-Plus drill and thought I was in heaven until Home Depot sent me this cordless SDS-Max drill. From the experiment I ran on some test concrete, the M-18 SDS max is almost twice as fast as my old drill. Plus, there are no cords to drag around. Please see the attached video for the drilling comparison. It is the same 5/8″ bit in both videos. Note that SDS-Plus and SDS-Max are not directly compatible. I highly recommend getting an adapter so you can use the cheaper, more common SDS Plus bits for smaller jobs. This drill is really big and has a ton of power. It only works on masonry/concrete jobs. It has hammer and hammer/rotate mode. There is no rotate only mode. On the SDS-Plus drills you can get a chuck for big drilling projects. There is also no reverse to help you get out of the hole you just made. It’s power and size, can get away from you. I couldn’t detect a safety clutch to minimize torque reaction. The case could double as a travel suitcase, it really is that big.If you need a drill that can handle the most challenging concrete drilling jobs get this one. If you are looking for a more all purpose dill, get an SDS-Plus with chuck attachment.

Great drill for the money. Does light jack hammering. It does a great job drilling 1&1/2” holes in concrete without any issue. Another quality M18 tool from Milwaukee.

WOW, OMG, Fabulous. The M18 FUEL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 1 9/16 in. SDS-Max Rotary Hammer Kit is so good, powerful, I kept forgetting it wasn’t a corded hammer kit. Easy fit chuck, 1 9/16 inch for the bit, chisels or percussion core bits. Great quality drill bits and accessories are a must as this is too powerful for poor quality bits. AWESOME…. Can not express how robust this is….

I must say, this drill can hold its own on a job site against any corded drill. I drilled a 3 5/8” core hole for 3” pvc and it did it without any trouble and didn’t phase the battery at all. Price is more than a corded version but you pay for quality.

This Milwaukee cordless rotary hammer is a beast to say the least. With a 9.0 ah Milwaukee M18 battery, the tool weighs about 15 pounds. The hammer/chisel function makes short work on breaking up concrete and masonry work. We tried this out to demo a footing used on an old basketball pole. The footing was too heavy to carry as one piece. The hammer/chisel function provided a quick safe way to break the large footing down to reasonable size pieces for disposal. This tool can be used to demo small concrete pads, block walls, and sidewalks. I do not recommend using this for large demo projects where you would be demoing thick concrete, large pads, and such. Tools of this size and design are not intended for continuous use like jackhammers, pavement breakers and Demolition Hammers. There are heavy vibrations from the hammer/chisel function. It does not appear the tool includes any damping for this. This may be an issue should you intend to use the tool for extended periods. The tool does require a good amount of energy. I recommend the 9.0 ah Milwaukee M18 battery for this tool.Be sure you purchase bits and chisels that are SDS-MAX. Your standard SDS bits do not fit.

I really wish this had a drill function for the coring bits like all other sds, sds plus rotary hammers. Otherwise it is a beast.

Milwaukee has come up with a great hammer drill. The one thing that makes it better than a corded drill is of course no cord needed, you can take it anywhere without the need of dragging a cord. This drill cut 4 3/4 inch holes for concrete anchors in 4 inch thick concrete effortlessly. The drill has plenty of torque so you need to hold on. Battery life is reasonably good. I haven’t had a chance to use the drill as a chisel yet but I feel sure that it will do as good a job. Although it’s a bit pricey for the occasional around the house job I highly recommend this tool.

Packaged in a large molded carrying case with two M18 Fuel 9.0 amp-hour batteries and charger, this rotary hammer incorporates an easily positioned (without the use of tools) auxiliary handle to steady and resist motion. The handle can be left on the tool, rotated to fit into the carrying case. A tube of grease is included for application to the shanks of the drill or chisel bits (SDS-Max). Interestingly, the tube of grease was the only location where I found the instruction to lubricate the bit “flutes” (failure to clean and lubricate will no doubt reduce the lifetime of the bits and the tool). There is sufficient room in the carry case for extra bits and chisels. Although provision for securing the case with a lock is provided, the plastic case could be easily compromised, but if you looped enough cable around it, it may be useful when in storage. The user manual recommends that every 6-12 months the tool be taken to a service center for lubrication and inspection. The batteries have a four element “fuel gauge” to indicate state of charge, and charging a fully discharged battery will take 30 to 150 minutes. The charger provided (which has provision for hanging on a vertical surface) has a port for differently configured M18 batteries in addition to the one for the batteries supplied. The charger incorporates protection against over charge, and charging when the battery is too hot or too cold. Status LEDs are provided to indicate when the battery is charging and how close to being fully charged it is. I haven’t had the tool long enough to fully discharge one of the batteries, but, when using a 3/4 inch masonry bit, was able to drill a nice clean hole through concrete in no time at all (using the hammer drill mode). a selector is provided to change from hammer/drill mode to hammer only (when using chisels for demolition). This same selector also allows one to rotate the orientation of the chisel for the most convenient “attack angle”. The batteries utilize Lithium Ion technology so, even though rated 18 volts, they pack a real punch. Care should be used though, when handling, storing or transporting the batteries to avoid damage. Although manufactured off-shore, quality seemed excellent and the performance was outstanding.

This tool is awesome. I am always impressed with Milwaukee’s ingenuity when it comes to all of their tools and I have yet to be let down by any of their offerings. This roto-hammer has the strength and ability of its chorded cousin and I read that it shares many of the same components. I have over two acres of property with a few outbuildings and other features that don’t have power to them. I usually end up bringing my generator out for any demolition work with a rented demo-hammer or I use a sledge hammer if their isn’t enough work to warrant a rental.I was able to use this tool with a chisel bit to bust off the concrete from recovered fence posts without any hesitation on the tools part. It made the work so much faster than a sledge and cold chisel and I wasn’t exhausted at the end of the day. This fence line is about 400 feet and downhill from the closest power source so I really didn’t want to drag the posts all the way back up to the shop and I have no way of getting my generator down to this point of my property. This will also be of great assistance removing many old 4″ concrete stanchions that were left behind from a previous owner. I have been avoiding this job like the plague as they are reinforced with rebar and they don’t break off easily. I may actually get this done and have time left over for something else.I have a couple small slabs going in for agricultural buildings and it will be nice to drill the anchor-bolt holes without having to drag out a generator again. I see this tool being a great benefit in the future for many other projects.

This Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 1-9/16 in. SDS-Max Rotary Hammer Kit is the tool only, meaning that it doesn’t come with a battery or charger. With a M18 High Demand 9.0 battery the hammer is very powerful and you won’t notice a difference in power to a corded version. A battery charge lasts about 15 -20 minutes of continuous hammering. That’s a good number, but I still recommend having a second battery on hand, depending on the size of your project.Charging takes somewhere between 30 – 60 minutes, I haven’t stopped the time exactly. The only disappointing point is that the tool doesn’t come with a case but rather only in a cardboard box.

Amazing tool, dug two 2.5 foot deep holes in hard clay on one 9.0 battery, using a 17” clay spade bit. Cuts through roots that other tools like an auger would struggle with. Can’t wait to use it on other applications.

My first impression of this rotary hammer is that it is huge- see the photo where I compared it to a 1/2 cordless drill. It lives up to expectation quickly cutting through concrete. For years I had been using a corded electric drill with conventional carbide bits so I was used to spending 15 minutes or more to drill a single hole in my concrete floor to anchor machine tools. This rotary hammer dramatically reduces the time. The ergonomic design is good to. Although big and heavy, the handles handles on the tool are well placed and at no point did I feel that the tool was getting away from me.

Great drill for professionals. Works fast and is easy to use. Drills through a foundation wall in 5-10 minutes. Not overly heavy compared to older corded models. Love it. Recommended!
