If you cut a lot of threaded rod this tool will make your life easy! The Milwaukee Threaded Rod Cutter is a specialized tool for those working with course threaded rod. It uses a moving top die and a fixed bottom die to cut threaded rod in 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch diameters. When used properly, the resulting cut will be clean with no thread damage allowing a nut to spin on without hesitation. The kit included the cutter, 2.0 Ah battery, charger and a hard case. The cutter is heavy but it can be used both hand held and on a bench or flat surface. Changing between rod diameters requires the dies to be detached and rotated then reattached. This is performed with a 5mm Allen key which is attached to the tool. Unfortunately, the short side of the Allen key is longer than a normal Allen key and I found it would hit the tool when screwing in the bottom die. It would be so much easier to use if it was a tad shorter. In addition, I found the Allen key does not fit tightly in its mounting location and I am worried it might fall out and be lost. The trigger for the cutter must be held through the whole cycle (i.e.: no lock option). This lets you bump the trigger a few times to get the dies to hold the rod and make sure it is in the tool properly and then execute the full cut. Post cut it will cycle back to fully open and stop. The tool also features a reverse button in case there is a jam or some other reason to not finish the cut cycle. An LED light also shines on the cutting area for improved visibility. The dies of the tool support the following materials:Mild Steel:1/4″-203/8”-161/2″-13M6x1M8x1.25M10x1.5M12x1.75Stainless Steel:1/4″-203/8”-16M6x1M8x1.25M10x1.5

This review is for the M18 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Brushless Threaded Rod Cutter (Tool-Only)When I first saw this I had my doubts about it being able to do what it says it can. I should have known better I guess coming from such a good tool brand, but still. How can something this compact cut rod this big including stainless steel. This is a heavy tool to begin with, and sure enough it cuts repeatedly without any issues at all. I was so tired of using a hack saw or my sawzall to cut steel. While this tool does not have the ergonomics of others in the M18 lineup, its a beast, and I highly recommend it.

Milwaukee 2872-20 M18 Brushless Threaded Rod Cutter – This tool is fantastic at cutting threaded rod fast and cleanly…The tool has a reverse feature allowing the dies be opened without making the cut…Anyone installing threaded rod into concrete ceilings using drop in anchors to build unistrut conduit racks will love using this tool…No more wiggle and bounce using hand hacksaws, trying to balance bands with (1) hand while holding the threaded rod with the other hand and no more using a grinder which could leave a burr that must be filed off before nuts will thread onto the rod…This tool makes a clean bur free cut every time in approximately 3 seconds…This tool will cut ¼”-20, 3/8”-16 and ½”-13 as well as metric M6 x1 , M8 x 1.25, M10 x 1.5 and M12 x 1.75 plain or galvanized rod…This tool will also cut ¼”-20 and 3/8”-16 as well as M6 x 1, M8 x 1.25 and M10 x 1.5 stainless rod…I tested this tool cutting 3/8”-16 galvanized rod, the tool performed as indicated, intended and expected without any problems or issue…

I’d only recommend it if you have 1000 rods to go back and trim a “1 from the bottom of your strut or like if your steady doing punch list stuff. Definitely far to expensive when I can only cut one at a time. I’ll slap like 8 rods in the vice and bandsaw it call it a day.

This tool easily and accurately cuts bolts and threaded rods. It is even possible to cut a sliver off the end that is the thickness of less than one turn of the thread. Each cut uses so little battery power that I have not been able to drain a 2 ah battery yet. The included cutting dies cut 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 bolts. The dies have 2 cutting surfaces for 3/8 inch. Switching between sizes requires completely removing and reinstalling the dies with the included hex wrench. The dies and their retaining screws are small so be sure to be careful not to drop anything. It is extremely easy to accidentally hit the power button and there is no trigger disable switch so do not carry it around or change the dies with a battery in it as the cutting dies are a hazardous pinch point. Be sure to follow proper safety while using it. It cuts slow enough that I have not had any bolt parts fly off but safety glasses should be used just in case. As advertised it definitely cuts the bolts and rods without deforming the threads. This is a heavy tool at 7 pounds 11 ounces without a battery and another pound with a 2 ah battery on it. The cutting head is heavier than the bottom and it is heavier on one side so do not set it on the battery end or it can easily fall over.

Its large grip makes it a little hard to grip in hard to reach areas.

I gave this 4 out of 5 stars due to it’s weight and the lack of a lock button so make sure the battery is out of it when not in use. Other than those complaints, this is a great tool that I find very very handy. I used this to cut some 1/4″-20 course thread rods. I needed the rods cut for some camera mounts that I am building. Prior to having this, my plan was to a recip saw or a hacksaw. This cut the rod CLEANLY in about 2 seconds. There were no burrs to clean up or tend to. I found that laying this down and operating it that way works best due to the heavy weight of this tool. Changing the cutting die was quick and easy, there is an allen wrench in the handle to swap them out. This comes with a 2.5ah battery and the reduced size of the battery compared to higher capacity batteries is recommended by me due to the weight difference

This tool can cut 3/8″ and smaller with ease but when it comes to the big stuff a band saw would be quicker. It takes anywhere from 3-7 swings to get through 1/2″. So if you cut mostly 1/2″, this isn’t a good investment.

I just got this product because I do Construcktion and cut a lot of 1/2 threaded rod over electrical machines. So far this thing is worth every penny. If it gets bad I’ll post about it.

It definitely makes cutting threaded rod a lot easier. Comes with everything pictured. Works great on rods under 1/2 inch rods, anything 1/2 or larger a saw will work better. Battery life does last a while, I got 3 hours and still had over half a battery charge left. It does leave a cleaner cut then using a saw and would highly recommend if planning to run nuts or fasteners later.

/amazing tool, I cut 1/4 in stainless rod and this tool cut with no burr. I have cut 500 so far and am happy with the performance. The handle gets warm but to be expected?

Works great if you use it correctly. This is a heavy duty tool with an emphasis on heavy. It has feet and is designed to be used flat on a bench or on the floor. My comment on using it correctly is that there are very specific diameters and thread pitches this will work with. With the right threaded rod in the dies, it cuts in just a second or two, leaving a clean cut that allows you to put on a nut without having to fix the threads.I popped in some stock that wasn’t on the list and it did cut it, but smashed in some new threads within a 1/2 inch of the cut. If you cram the wrong stock in and jam the tool, it has a reverse mode so you can get the jaws back open. Read the manual! The dies are replaceable using the included Allen key so you should get a lot of mileage from this tool. Milwaukee gives you a case, a charger, and a 2 A/hr battery. I’d like a battery with more storage, but that would add substantial weight to the package.

This is a very specialized tool that does one thing, and that one thing it does very well. If you are in a trade where you need to cut allthread, this tool is a real time saver. It quickly and cleanly cuts the rod and I have noticed that the bottom piece almost always requires no filing to get a bolt to screw onto it. The top piece may require a little filing, but this is a world quicker than using a portaband or grinder. If you need to get close to an object, you can get approx 1 1/4″ away and still make the cut. It will cut rod up to 1/2″ thick, but the key is the threaded cutters that hold the allthread precisely to allow a cut that is clean and fast. It is quite heavy, as the brushless motor inside must be heavy duty to cut steel that quickly and cleanly. And of course the M18 lithium batteries (not included) will allow you to use it all day long without missing a beat.

Over the years I have cut threaded rod with everything from hack saws, grinders, sawzalls, band saws, and now this. The least amount of work previous to purchasing this rod cutter was the band saw as it gave a clean cut without having to de-bur the edge to fit a nut onto it. But this method still took a minute or two. I originally was going to do a comparison on cutting speed between the band saw and the rod cutter, but after trying the rod cutter, there was no need. The rod cutter cut 3/8″ mild steel in a matter of a few seconds, less than 5 seconds. It cut clean, no de-burring needed. The only complaints I have is the weight is heavy and the balance of the tool is very one sided. The cutter head side is heavy and off balance to the handle and the battery when using with the 2.0Ah battery that is included. I haven’t tried it with any of my 5.0 or 9.0 batteries, but I would think the weight of those batteries might help the balance issue, but not the weight issue.

Im actually not sure about that because i was not around before sliced bread but i definitely love this tool for cutting big rods. When before there were so many rods i had to take care of now this device handles even the biggest and hardest of rods with ease and precision. and the best part i can do it with one hand!!!!
