I have been a builder remodeler for 49 years, and as such I have many opportunities to use a tool like this Milwaukee PLUSLOK 12 IN. SDS-PLUS CARBIDE BIT EXTENSION. This tool is of high quality, and it works very well for work requiring impact drilling work with an SDS hammer drill as we often do. Milwaukee tools are always of high quality as well, so this is a very good example of that.

The Milwaukee SDS Pluslok 12 inch extension is a nice tool for use with a rotary hammer drill. It is heavy duty and typical Milwaukee high quality that I am use to. The 12 inch reach comes in handy in many situations and the bit holder is too large to slip into or through the drilled hole. Overall this is a nice quality product typical of Milwaukee.

Milwaukee 48-20-6940 12” SDS PLUS-LOK Drill and Tool Extension – This extension allows a drill bit, chisel or scrapper to be extended 12”…When using this extension to extend the overall reach of a drill bit, any size drill bit can be used…When using this extension to increase the drilling depth of a drill bit, the drill bit must be larger than the diameter of the quick collar on the extension, larger than ¾”…When using this extension to extend the reach of a chisel, any size chisel can be used…When using this extension to extend the reach of a scrapper, any size scrapper can be used…I tested this tool as a drill bit extension, making the task of drilling anchor holes in a concrete ceiling easier…This extension performed as indicated, intended and expected without any problems…

This is an outstanding addition to your rotary hammer/drill collection. It is built with a slide locking mechanism similar to the one on your drill itself. Unless you are drilling a very large hole the extension won’t allow you to go deeper than the length of your bit, it will allow you to reach places that you otherwise can’t reach. It seems to me that the combination loses a bit of its “hammer power” which is understandable since it is going through another connection. It was not a big deal but I mention it in case you drill does not have a powerful hammer action to begin with. This extension works great and simplifies access on some of my projects.

A while back I got hold of a Milwaukee 1 3/4″ SDS-Max rotary hammer (OMSID 307857035). Immediately, I bought the Bosch SDS-Max to SDS-Plus adapter (OMSID 203747306) and a selection of SDS-Plus bits to suit my most pressing needs. I then determined that I needed greater reach. As bits get longer the price can increase exponentially. Get hold of one of these extensions and save some money! A 7/8″ bit will allow you to drill a hole in concrete to the full length of the bit and extension. The chuck is designed for one-handed bit insertion. It’s a little harder to remove them, especially if your hands are covered in gunk. It seems Milwaukee has thought of everything; as concrete bits are wont to do, they often get impossibly stuck in the hole. “Flats” have been machined into the extension chuck to accommodate a wrench to assist in backing out the bit in that event. Time will tell if the metal used will hold up to the rigors of the job site as do Hilti and Bosch. But, again, Milwaukee seems to have thought of everything.

How did I miss this device all these years? This is a great addition to my SDS bit collection. Not only does it extend the depth of a hole you can drill, it allows one to assume a more comfortable position in many cases by extending your reach. I find that it also allows me to drill holes in floor surfaces without kneeling. The new chuck releases smoothly but could use knurled surfaces on both sides of the chick or even all-around for better grip. There is a directional arrow on one side of the sliding chuck release indicating the release direction. Again, arrows should be on at least both sides. For drilling a deep hole, the OD of the chuck body limits hole diameter to a minimum of about 7/8-inch—not really a problem for practical purposes. One negative is that the spring-loaded chuck release slide and the chuck body are the same diameter and meet tightly with sharp edges on each piece. You will quickly learn to keep your fingers clear of this area—as I did. It seems like the edges could be rounded or chamfered to eliminate, or at least reduce, this pinch point without affecting its function. There was one significant surprise that showed up after six weeks in my Milwaukee Hammer-drill case: the whole device, and especially the shaft, developed significant rust. See the comparative photo showing a brand new extension beside the six-weekold product.. It needs some type of protective coating to prevent oxidation. The chuck release slide needed to be lubricated to restore the smooth action it had when new.

The Milwaukee PLUSLOK 12 in. SDS-PLUS Carbide Bit Extension is a good length and very heavy duty. The bits (not Milwaukee bits) that I have on hand fit perfectly so I did not need to purchase any additional bits and the shaft is a standard size that should fit your drill. This is designed for use with a hammer drill and has a slide lock for the bit, like a typical rotary hammer drill; that is a very nice feature. I now have several Milwaukee products and am pleased with them and with the customer service I’ve encountered.

This extension gives me some possibilities that other wise would be a problem. Some areas are tight for drilling that a drill can not fit into. The extension can go into the tight areas and the drill is easy to work with room on the outside of the tight area. If working over head a ladder may not be needed with the extension giving me the high I need. The drills quickly snap in and out.
