First of all, I am pretty sure this isn’t a carbide bit (maybe its a small % carbide), because it does dull in concrete after about 10 minutes and carbide wouldn’t dull that quickly. Also on the actual product package it doesn’t say carbide.Aside from that, it’s a great SDS bit. The tip will stay relatively flat forever, because of the design, but it will dull and loose the sharp edge after about 10 minutes in concrete. When that happens I like to use an angle grinder with an abrasive wheel to re-sharpen it, which takes about 10 seconds but the bit becomes about 1/16″ shorter, then its as sharp as when it was new. And because of the bits’ design, I can keep doing that almost forever.I like how Milwaukee not only makes good value tools, but also puts thought into what the end user will be doing with their product and what they need.

Behold! Excalibur! I took this MILWAUKEE 1 IN. CARBIDE SDS-MAX FLAT CHISEL BIT out to the yard to challenge some of the boulders on my property I’d like to arrange a lot more to my advantage. I began to push it into a stone attached to the hammer drill and it sunk in like butter. I said to myself,”This is working very well”. Then when I was satisfied I’d had my way with this boulder and this big rock would soon be more littler rocks, I went to withdraw it. There was a problem, it was stuck in there. Said to myself,”This reminds me of an old story”.(The Sword in the Stone) It was buried in the rock and not coming out. So I got a sledge hammer and pounded it up and down and then side to side. I was finally able to withdraw it. After beating on it with the sledge hammer it was not bent in the least. So starting again, I used it to nibble away at the rock, knocking smaller pieces off. Make no mistake, if you put this in the hammer drill and start working, you WILL work hard. But when you are working this is a great bit to help you get the job done. Milwaukee tools, synonymous with quality. This one is made in Germany. Another indication of quality. It is a great addition to the SDS Max toolkit. Not a bad price either. After drilling at the rock for about an hour it was still sharp, still had a nice edge.

The Milwaukee 1 in. x 16 in. SDS MAX Chisel is one of three I used in removing old (30+ yrs. old) floor tile in a small bathroom. Of the three, and being only one inch wide, this is what I dubbed my “fine tune” chisel. It was for those small spots where the old thin set seemed to be permanently bonded to the slab. With the right angle and the plus 21 pounds of my hammer drill you have a lot more control in removing the old stuff without damaging the slab. It is said this is a “self-sharpening” bit. It is made in Germany from high grade forged steel not like “other” no name, after market and no specs. on what type steel or how it is forged. Hint, always put a little high grade grease on the end before installing in the the chuck. Good hammer drills are not cheap, so don’t use cheap bits and chisels. Milwaukee drill Milwaukee bits.

I’m a homeowner/DIY’er not a pro skilled trades-person, so this review comes from that standpoint.I’m using the Milwaukee SDS-Max chisel (model 48-62-4252) in a Milwaukee rotary hammer (model # 2718-22), but the chisel will work in any brand of SDS-Max chuck. You’ll want to remember to put a little grease on the mount end before mounting in the hammer. These chisels go under a lot of pressure and can get warm and it’s not a good thing to get one stuck in the hammer. Using eye and hearing protection is a must. I use over-the-head earmuffs and a full-face shield. In use this chisel does a great job of breaking up the concrete bits and pieces we frequently find when trying to plant roses or other bushes. The builders of the house simply plowed existing rubble under, covered it with topsoil and called it good. Breaking up bricks, rebar concrete blocks, etc. into bits small enough to put into buckets for disposal is a real trudge with a hand chisel and mallet. With the SDS-Max chisel in a rotary hammer it’s a piece of cake (it’s still work, but compared to using a sledge hammer, it really is a piece of cake. YMMV). The chisel is supposed to be ‘self-sharpening’; I don’t think I’ve put it under enough stress to actually dull the tool – it just keeps chomping away at the concrete and brick.It works as advertised, fit and finish is excellent, and Home Depot offers a 90-day return policy. It’s saving me a lot of work swinging a 5-pound sledge – and that always rates 5 stars in my book.HTHRegards,Jim
