Usually I applaud Milwaukee for their tools and accessories. This time, not so much. The idea is good – a drill and screw tap in one bit – but the design makes it a “bit” hard to use. The short tap threads cut easily, but if the threads go through the material and out the other side, it’s almost impossible to get them back out (see photo). I had to use the drill (on reverse) to remove the bit, cross-threading the hole in the process. If you can stop the cut before the thread goes through the metal, backing out is easy, but even on thin material (I used 1/8” aluminum) that doesn’t give much margin. Drilling the hole, of course, takes a bit of pressure on the drill and a fairly slow speed, but once the drill cuts the hole the tap grabs very quickly and before you know it you are through the material. On a different note, the shanks are laser engraved to show the thread size, but the marking are pretty small and hard to read, not like on other Milwaukee drill bit shanks where the markings are bolder. The is no denying the quality and precision of this set. In most cases though, I’d prefer the two-step process of separate drills and taps.

What a great innovation for tapping. Whenever I have had to tap a hole for a screw I can’t remember what size drill I need to match the tap. Plus, I usually have problems with the tap tools not turnng the tap well or struggling to cut threads. This all in one kit solves those problems. The integrated drill bit ensures I always have the right size and using the bit in an impact driver ensures I have the power to cut the threads. For my testing, I used this kit to cut 8-32 threads in a metal electrical box. What a joy to have it drill through the metal with ease and then cut the threads super fast. The bit even features a countersink but I did not use that feature in my test.A few minor concerns:1) Once I drilled through the material, the impact driver cut the threads super fast and pushed the thread cutting portion of the bit all the way through to the countersink. To get the bit back out of the hole you have to reverse, but since the new threads are not engaged with the cutter you have to be careful to ensure you do not come out at an angle cutting new threads and in essence stripping the entire hole.2) The set does not include the extremely common 6-32 sized used for standard electrical box screws. The web description does not indicate the correct sizes include in this kit. What is included is as follows:8-3210-2410-3212-241/4-20Overall, I recommend this product and found it extremely useful.

I really like my new Milwaukee Shockwave Impact Drill-Tap set for impact and drill drivers. For my first use, I drilled and tapped a 2-inch square tube with 3/16 side walls. The first thing I did was center punch and put a drop of oil on the square tube. Then I inserted the ¼- 20 drill/tap into my Milwaukee “Surge” impact driver. I drilled through the side wall of the tube (just like using a separate drill bit) reducing the force just before completing the drill hole. I reduced the speed of the impact drive and continued with the tap and slowly tapped the hole. I reversed the driver and removed the tap. In reverse the tap just unscrewed itself out the freshly tapped hole. I screwed an eyebolt into the newly tapped hole, and it screwed in just like it was supposed to. I tightened the jam nut to hold and lock the eyebolt in place. The threads were perfect. The combination drill/tap worked just like a separate drill and tap would have only I didn’t have to remove the special combo drill and tap during the process. I’ve included a picture of the easy to read laser etching of the size of the special bit. I hope Milwaukee comes out with larger size combo drill/tap bits. Another positive is with the combo drill/tap bit you don’t have to look up the drill size for a specific tap size, it’s all in one bit. These are really cool.

These drill and tap hex bits are a super great idea and work really well. Basically you just pick your size, drill a hole with the bit and as it continues through the material it will tap the threads and countersink the top (if you so desire) then you just reverse the bit back out of the hole. The drilling portion of the bit cuts quite well. The tapping portion takes a little more effort but does not twist very hard. They will drill and tap up to 1/4″ thick material, I found this to be true and it worked well on plastic, aluminum and mild steel. One thing to be careful of is not to bend the bits as they are quite ridged and will break rather than bend. After you have drilled and tapped the hole you can just back the bit out if you do not want a countersink or continue to push down if you want it countersunk. I used them with and without oil, and they work just fine both ways but they operate easier with the oil and I would think that would extend their life. The only thing I didn’t like was that they do not come with any kind of case, box or holder. Each bit is marked with the size, but the markings could be a little easier to see. The sizes they come in are 8-32, 10-32, 10-24,12-24, and 1/4″-20. The top of the bit is a standard 1/4″ hex and they are about 2 1/4 inches long. All in all a really cool idea that works really well and is going to save me a bunch of time.

The SHOCKWAVE SAE Steel Drill Tap Set (5-Piece) will drill in metal and tap out the hole at the same time and drill always to butt of bit Its also countersinks in metal , I also suggest a drop of cutting oil to extend the life of your metal bits , and I suggest drill holes at a much lower speed to keep from dulling bit or turning the bit blue and then it will loose its hardness constancy possible , Another great tool to have around your shop ..

I got this SHOCKWAVE SAE Steel Drill Tap Set to replace an old tap set I had worn out. As I have experienced with other products from Milwaukee Tool, this is a solid, high-quality tool set. I put it to use immediately tapping out 3 holes in a steel vise base so I could mount it permanently to a larger plywood base. It handled the job perfectly. As with all metal drilling, I used lubricating oil to keep things cool, and the SHOCKWAVE drill bit ate through the steel with no problem. Once through, the tap cut the bolt threads effortlessly. The drill/tap left no burs behind for the bolt to hang up on, so the end result was a very clean threaded bolt hole, which holds the bolt securely. Mission accomplished! I recommend this drill set.

Only gave 4 stars because of 3 main problems. I usually like Milwaukee products, but it seems like they didn’t put as much effort into this product. First problem, drill and tap sets of this size are typically used by an electrician or somebody doing electrical tasks. The kit completely lacks a 6-32 tap, the most commonly needed size for mounting devices and gives you a 12-24 tap that most electricians will never use, especially an electrician or homeowner shopping at HD. The 1/4-20 might get used, but probably not. They should have included a 6-32, 8-32, 10-24 and two 10-32’s in the five piece kit.Second problem, nothing to hold the five taps together so they don’t migrate all over your tool bag. Didn’t need to be a hard case, just a flexible rubber piece with holes in it to keep them all together for easy location. Third problem, the laser engraving is really hard to see with older eyes. It’s not deep, or bold, so identifying the tap is difficult. That being said, they cut well, fit my impactor and drill well, even fit a hex drive screw driver. The hole they tapped held a screw very well. Fix the 3 problems and you have a 5 star product.

The Milwaukee SHOCKWAVE 5-piece SAE steel drill tap set is a welcome addition to my tool collection. The set includes what I would consider the most common sizes one is likely to encounter. They attached quickly and easily to my Milwaukee driver and made short work of every test hole I drilled. In cast iron, aluminum, and wood I got perfect holes that were drilled, tapped, and counter-sunk with ease. I got no resistance when threading screws and tight, wobble-free, fit. I would swear these holes were drilled in a factory.I did not try these in my drill and they are specifically recommended for use in a driver. I suppose it would work, just not as efficiently. I was always taught that when drilling into metal you should use a lubricating oil and was surprised to see that wasn’t mentioned on the package. Since these are a little pricey for 5 bits (the only reason I am deducting one star), I did use oil to help keep them cool and long-lasting.Another quality tool from Milwaukee and a great item to have whether you need it today or want it on hand for some unforeseen job down the road.

Another fantastic innovation from Milwaukee Tool. These combination drill/tap/countersink bits are a super time saver. The points on the larger drills are split and back relieved for faster drilling with less force. Just be careful not to ram the drill through and possibly damage the tap and then be VERY careful with the countersink that it does not grab and drill out the threads. They do not say what steel is used but it drills like HSS. I only drilled one hole in 1/8″ thick mild steel but it cut like butter and the tool showed no wear at all. NOTE: do not try to use a regular drill but make sure you use an impact wrench. That is what they are designed for. Be safe and drill and tap with proper safety eye wear on my friend.

The Milwaukee Shockwave 5-piece SAE Impact Drill Tap Set drills and taps at the same time, and can also countersink the top surface to allow for easier screw entry in blind assembly applications. The cut extremely well in aluminum and mild steel with minimal cutting lubrication. Based on the drill/tap material hardness, I would not recommend them for high strength/hardness steels. The bits are intended for use in up to 1/4 in. metal. The laser etched size allows for easy size identification, and the 5 piece set includes 8-32, 10-24, 10-32, 12-24, and ¼-20. The bit is design for use in Impact Drivers and Drill Drivers. I found that these worked very well in my drill press and in my mill. I especially like the ability to drill and tap (and counter sink) in one setup without having to change the cutter. These are a good addition for the home shop and for the electrician doing repairs and upgrades to exterior components and boxes. They chase and clean up corroded screw holes very well. These are made in China.

They hold up to the Milwaukee name. I purchased a set from Klein Tools as well and broke one of the bits on day one simply drilling into polycarbonate 1/2 inch… The Milwaukee set is still holding up great over 2 months later.

This Milwaukee Shockwave SAE 5-Piece Steel Drill Tap Set is an absolute time saver. The ability to bring drilling and tapping at a high rate of speed in a single process and into my business changes the game for us. For years we started with a more precision process when drilling (ie. press) and followed with manually tapping each hole. With modern processes, we drill and tap on-the-fly!Purchasing options for both set and individual makes this even more versatile. Two thumbs up!

A real time saver when one needs to drill and tap a number of holes, these combination bits incorporate three section: the drill point, the tapping section and a countersink. The packaging states that they can be used in impact drivers or drill motors (and I tried them with both), but a little extra finesse will be required when used in a drill motor when the tap section engages the work piece. Specified for use in up to ¼ inch material, several of the bits were used to drill and tap holes in 0.130 inch steel and ¼ inch steel. In both cases they were used both with an impact driver and as drill motor (the bit shanks are standard ¼ inch hex with retention groove for impact drivers). The ¼-20 and 12-24 bits were used dry (as in many cases these will be used on vertical panels making lubrication difficult) and easily functioned as advertised. When using the bit in a drill motor, some care needs to be taken to avoid countersinking too deeply, as the tap advances quite rapidly (compared to use in an impact driver where the incremental rotary motion imparted by the driver slows down the advancing tap) and one may find the countersink plunging too far into the work piece. Five sizes are included (8-32, 10-24, 10-32, 12-24 and ¼-20) with the sizes laser etched into each bit. When tested with a thread gauge, the tapped holes were spot on. The time savings compared to separately drilling and then hand tapping the resulting holes is impressive and will find favor with those fabricating items requiring threaded mounting hardware.

It’s really hard to recommend this kit when it does not have a 6-32 size. For us it is by far our most common used size. I generally don’t tap bits in the impact drivers as love to break them (6-32/8-32 anyways) Bit works well but have only used them a few times, so I cannot speak to the durability yet.
