The Milwaukee 1-3/4 in. SDS-Max Rotary Hammer has a powerful 15 Amp Motor capable of delivering 8.1 ft./lbs. of impact energy for the most demanding applications. The AUTOSTOP E-Clutch prevents over-rotation of the tool in case of tool lock up giving users a more controlled experience while using the corded rotary hammer drill. The variable speed dial allows users to set the optimal speed per application while 2 modes, Rotary Hammer and Hammer Only, allow easy transitions between drilling large holes or chipping applications. When chipping, a lock-on button allows users to chip without constantly pulling the trigger. Built-in Advanced AVS (Anti-Vibration System) minimizes the vibration users feel while using the rotary hammer drill. Includes a free 13 Amp 5 in. Small Angle Grinder With Dial Speed (6117-33D). The 13 Amp small angle grinder from Milwaukee maintains speed under load to power through tough jobs. Overall quality, power, and features superior to comparable size Makita or DeWalt. The vibration dampening handle is not as effective as hoped, but still a good feature. Noise level at #5 speed (no load) can exceed 90 DBL, which warrants ear protection. In summary, it is a high quality, heavy duty, commercial grade tool well worth the price.

I have gone totally Milwaukee. Every tool of theirs I have gotten (and my handyman and my son) has been just outstanding. This is no exception. Used a Dewalt for many years. It was very good … but this is a definite step up. Doing heavy demo of old plaster walls. This cuts through much better than anything else I have used. Thanks Milwaukee! Also easy to change blades, move / remove protective cover to various positions or take off.

Great features with the variable speed control as well as the vibration dampening handle. Quite possibly the best built, best grinder for its size on the market. Very impressed.

Wow! Believe anything you read about this fine rotary-hammer by Milwaukee…especially its size. This thing is huge, weighing in at a whopping 23.2 pounds. The plastic housing probably saves a lot of weight. The tool reminds me of the TE-60s and -72s I carried for years, with some serious improvements: the Advanced Vibration System and variable-speed. Another big improvement is the price point; this tool comes in at a fraction of the cost of Hilti and some others. This is probably a small thing, but I like that the cord is 16′ long, making the job easier because you often don’t need an extension cord. My first purchase after getting this was to buy the Bosch SDS-max to SDS-plus adapter (OMSID 203747306), which allows me to use all my SDS-plus bits with this tool, too. Time will tell how it holds up to hard use, but Milwaukee’s engineering and quality has not been degraded by the change of “country of origin”. I have many Milwaukee tools that I owned for over 40 years, and trust in them.

Perfect little machine. Met all expectations so far even when being ran in the cold, very easy to operate. The variable speed switch is very stiff which I believe is a good thing so vibrations won’t rattle it out of place.

Little more heavier than a Makita grinder, but after a couple of weeks of heavy use on granite work it’s been working pretty good and solid.

Milwaukee 5546-21 1-3/4″ SDS MAX Rotary Hammer. Features are a 15 A motor rating, variable speed, dual-mode (rotary hammer and hammer only. There is a “Chisel” setting but it just sets the angle of the chisel edge in relation to the tool), an Anti-Vibration System and what Milwaukee calls an AUTOSTOP E-Clutch that will is supposed to prevent over-rotation in the event of tool lock up. I could never get the tool to lock up, so I don’t know how well it works. The tool comes in a blow-molded case with NO bits, so after seeing that none of my SDS bits would fit this monster, I went and bought some. There is an adapter that will fit SDS bits into SDS MAX chucks, but this thing might just break the small ones. It is heavy, (21.0 lbs on the bath scale), and busts what concrete I had to demo like a jackhammer. It makes my 1″ Bosch SDS look sad. I do not know how often I will use this, I am not a mason, but an assortment of breaking, coring (6″! ) drilling and digging bits are available that makes this all purpose. If you have a need, I highly recommend it.

I do occasional drilling into masonry, mostly for installing Tapcons, and in the past have attempted to use a regular drill. I have learned over time that a hammer drill is really necessary to make drilling into concrete reasonable, and have long considered getting a hammer drill for these occasional applications. I also am in the early stages of planning a project to partially finish my unfinished basement, so I wanted to get a hammer drill that was of high quality and on the heavier duty side. This drill is top-notch for quality and durability. Note that this is a very large tool and rather heavy. I was concerned that this tool was going to be a beast when turned on: this certainly is not the case, as it is much quieter than I was expecting and extremely smooth to use. However, it did have a lot of power and makes drilling into concrete very easy when set to the hammer drill mode. There are also two other modes, including one that is for chiseling. I have not yet tried this feature (other than setting the tool to chisel to see how it acts), but it will come in handy as I am considering some exterior work that will involve chiseling concrete. Selecting these modes is very smooth and easy. Again pleasantly surprised that such a powerful tool runs so smoothly. The one major snag I had in starting with this tool was learning the difference between SDS, SDS-plus, and SDS-Max bits. I had SDS bits but it took me a while to figure out why I could not get these bits to fit: I later learned that these three bits are incompatible with one another. This was entirely my mistake, as I am used to the adjustable chucks on regular drills. Therefore, be sure that any bit you purchase for this tool is a SDS-MAX bit.I look forward to using this tool more. I’m really becoming a fan of Milwaukee tools, the quality is top-notch and they feel quite durable.

Use this hammer drill for driving ground rods a little getting it up eight feet but when I pull the trigger the ground rod is done I did three sets yesterday saved my ribs from beating them in.

This Combination hammer drill is loaded with practical features. All of them seem to be well thought out, easy to activate, and use. The quality is stunning, no unfinished mating areas, all screws, bolts, nuts are tighten.Be surprised, not the case always. The quality control is in place and adhered too. This is no slouch, a real drill. The instructions are well executed. Packed extremely well. …………

I’ve been using SDS-Max rotary hammers for years and this Milwaukee 1-3/4 15A combination hammer is a dream to use. The 15A motor hits hard with 8.1 ft lbs of impact energy and drills easily through concrete with appropriate drill bits, and can be used to chip concrete and other similar type of cementitious materials. It drove three ground rods through clay soil easily with a ground rod driver just last week. I like how it has a variable speed dial, the e-clutch for safety and an antivibration system to protect the user against tool vibration especially during extended use. I can personally attest that long term chipping can leave your hands and arms feeling numb and terrible. AVS systems help reduce it. Overall this is a great standard-sized sds-max rotary hammer loaded with features for a wide variety of tasks. Whether you are drilling holes in concrete, chipping concrete, chiseling up flooring including tile and vinyl, digging hard clay with a spade, driving ground rods or other similar tasks, this is a highly professional tool for everyday use even in commercial settings. If you need it you won’t regret getting it.

This is a big boy toy/tool. First of all be advised this tool uses “sds max ” type bits. Yes you can by an adapter for spline-sds-sds+ to max, proceed with caution though. See the pic. that shows the diameter difference of an sds+ compared to sds max. This tool has a lot of features, check the HD page for this model # 5546-21, scroll down to “info and guides” and click use and care manual. This will give you a good idea of what this baby can do. Also use the included grease, they give it to you for a reason, think friction and heat. Don’t use water as a cooling mechanism, it will just gum things up, use a shop vac. if necessary and a mask with safety glasses. The max is heavy, 20+ lbs. which is nice when you are drilling down, or chipping, let the tool do the work, moderate force works best with Anti-Vibration System. All the features make this nice to use ,but it will wear you out. If you do have to use this with an extension cord, check the specs, long distant means a voltage drop, which could lead to motor failure. Clean and maintain this tool and will last for years. There is not much this tool can’t do. The only thing that surprised me was why they didn’t include the Depth Gauge Rod. Not a deal breaker though.

Wow, What a Tool! Milwaukee does make some of the BEST Tradesman Tools out there. This is One! Upon getting this I went to work demoing the small 2×3 concrete pad that was poured in a spot that just didn’t make any sense. With the paddle chisel this unit cut and crushed this concrete up like butter. This unit is Heavy Duty & the whole hand grip trigger is Awesome! Bits lock into chuck very easily & there are many to choose from depending on your project. This is not a Wimpy Wimpy Rotary Hammer, this thing is a BEAST! This is for the Tradesman or a DIYer who wants a Quality Tool!
