I am an iron worker and purchased this for fabrication in the shop. While it is 7 pounds, it is the most capable 5 inch i have used and its performance is excellent. It has been dropped in the field from 20 plus feet and survived no problem. The only minor complaint I have is the guard has a springloaded lever and tooth system instead of the clamp style on dewalt and makita. While I have not had a problem moving the guard, I am not a fan of only being allowed to position the guard in certain places.

Marketed by Milwaukee as a 5″ 11000 rpm angle grinder (that rpm being typical of 4.5″) I wanted this to power my 4.5″ wheels especially snag wheels (Norton BLUEfire foundry; Norzon Plus; crusty old out-of-balance Harbor Freight made-in-Russia wheels I’d like to use up, etc) as a means of quickly removing large quantities of steel from tight work spaces, i.e., old steel wheels, and out-of-position rebar grinding. My old 10 amp grinders slow down when I place demands on snag wheels. I bought part number 14-32-0210 Milwaukee 4-1/2″ guard online thus successfully accessorizing my new 6117-30 to become 4.5″. Its electronic cruise control means up to 13 amps of work in a small package. I can feel all that power in this grinder. Kind note to Milwaukee: Ordering my 4.5″ guard separately was a chore – Please consider shipping that guard with your 6117’s.Testing and use of my 6117-30: Safety information first: A while back I completely filled my propane tank with water, then I cut off the end caps using my 15 amp Ridgid 7″ with 7″ cutoff wheel. Shortly after I tested this grinder to remove propane tank nubbins, somebody comes up with an urgent grinding job for me on their large fabricated steel part. Based on that grinding I am happy to report this grinder is also my new precision grinder, formerly my Milwaukee 10 amp.I have relegated both of my DeWalts to 4.5″ cutoff duty, one for new 4.5″ cutoff wheels and the other for heavily used 4.5″ cutoff wheels, because it never fails I get situations that need extra reach while the vast majority of the time a well-used cutoff wheel will do just fine. My old Milwaukee 10 amp 4.5″ has been relegated to flap disc duty. I’m now well equipped. This thing has good balance and I can place my wheel exactly where I want it. Light weight for lots of repeated cross hatching when I want to flatten out a surface. This is by far the best 4.5″ angle grinder I’ve ever owned.

This grinder is top notch for the price. It is smooth and powerful and the variable speed option is great. The tool less arbor and guard are also very nice features. This grinder has help up to hundreds of hours of use and some drops and I will buy another one when this one wears out.
