Eliminate monthly cable modem rental fees with the C7800 Nighthawk X4S Wireless AC3200 Dual-Band Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 Modem & Router from Netgear. With this combination cable modem and router, you can connect your coax network cable directly to the C7800 and begin distributing that connection right away. The C7800 comes compatible with Xfinity by Comcast, Spectrum, and COX cable Internet services.
Once configured the DOCSIS 3.1 modem offers enhanced 32×8 channel bonding supporting download speeds of up to 1 Gbps. That fast connection can then be distributed wirelessly using the built in 802.11ac Wi-Fi router. This router operates on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies with data transfer rates of up to 3200 Mbps. Users also benefit from built-in beamforming technology accompanied by four high performance antennas for maximum wireless coverage. If a wired connection is needed the C7800 also comes equipped with four Gigabit LAN ports making it easy to connect Ethernet enabled devices directly to the network. The Nighthawk X4S also comes equipped with dual USB 3.0 ports to connect USB enabled peripherals to the network.

It took something more than an hour and two calls to tech support to set up this modem/router. Any person who has set up six or more of these in the last year would be able to do it in about ten minutes; but there is a fair amount of ambiguity in the instructions. Most of the online steps fail to anticipate that you could ever interpret things differently. We replaced a ten year old cable modem and a five year old wireless router with this and a number of problems just went away. Video streams from Netflix and Amazon Prime now render with unprecedented crispness and play without interruptions. We are very happy.

Although I bought the device from Best Buy I thought it was important to share my experience with the C7800. I don’t typically spend the effort to write reviews but feel it was important to in this case. My apologies in advance for the length of this review. I’ve had other Netgear devices that have performed well, but not the C7800. On June 9th I purchased the modem/router after a lightning strike took out lots of my home electronics. I struggled for several weeks trying to get my smart home working reliably again. The root cause of my problem was the C7800 dropping 2GHz WiFi connections periodically. Then its SSID would disappear so you couldn’t even log the device back it. Another reboot and it was live again. By this time, it was too late to return it to the store. After numerous tech support calls, chats and troubleshooting sessions I convinced them to send me a replacement. (It shouldn’t have been that hard! It was clearly defective.) The replacement was a refurbished device that had even worse problems. I have hobbies that include designing devices that are WiFi enabled. With the refurb I was able to log into the C7800 without the router acknowledging my device in the attached devices screen in the router. A big security scare for me. Plus, the router kept dropping devices. After many more discussions and troubleshooting sessions, they agreed to send me another C7800. I actually wanted them to send me a different lower cost router but they refused. However they did agreed to send me a NEW C7800 this time. Unfortunately, they sent another refub that I didn’t even try. I returned that one and they eventually sent me another new C7800, again refusing to send a cheaper router to make me happy. I would like to say this one worked better but this device couldn’t give me a display of what devices where connected to the router 2 times in a row and get the same list. At this time, I DEMANDED a different device. This was day 113 of my battle with the C7800 and Netgear. After that demand they ghosted me, so I finally went out and bought a Arris modem and Linksys router. I had it working reliably in 2 hours (of which 1 hour was driving to and back from Best Buy). Finally at day 142 I heard back from Netgear as the case was still open. I told them the C7800 is in the trash where it belongs and close the case, I don’t want to waste any more time with you. So just a warning. The device might work well for some simple applications but anything beyond that I would not recommend the device. I’m also concerned about its security. I offered to work with Netgear engineers to address the security concerns but the tech support person did not take me up on the offer. So I’m not so happy with Netgear as well. Just for reference I feel competent in my analysis having 2 degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a 35 year technical career.

I’ve had Netgear products for many years and this is by far my best experience. I was able to downsize from two routers on opposite ends of the house, to just this one. It’s still at the far side of the house for the coax, but now I have awesome wifi not only in my bedroom but also throughout our 1/2 acre property. Setup was very simple and support was exceedingly helpful.

We cut the cable 4 months ago. We wanted to reconnect the internet when our snowbird winter was over. I called Spectrum on my cell phone, connected to the preexisting cable and the hook up couldn’t have been smoother. We are now enjoying WiFi throughout the house.

my house is too wide, so i had to buy an extender. I bought EX8000 which seems to have longer range than this device

Simply hook it up to your power supply and cable providers outlet, call the cable provider tech support at the number provided with the modem/ router and all is done on your part. It’s fast and dependable, love this modem.
