I waited a week and a half before writing this review. I have used the Nova Comet 2 to make several pens and bowls. It runs smooth, it is very quiet, it has plenty of power and there is very little vibration if any at all. I love the reverse mode for sanding it helps get a clean smooth surface on your work piece. I have not had any problems with the tail stock holding when tightened. When I first got the comet 2, I cleaned the oil film that keeps it rust free while shipping. I used alcohol to take it off, this very important. Then I polished it with wax as recommended. I am very happy with my new lathe.

It is a good lathe and works well. It would be nice if it had an rpm readout. I have had other Nova products and have found them all to be of good quality. Home Depot offered the best price and free shipping.

Well made. Like the variable speed and reverse. Will suite me in the projects I need to do.

The RPM reader was off balanced and had to fix it myself. Other than that, works great and loving it.

Delivered on time and works well

The tail stock needs a little polishing to get it to run smoothly otherwise a good mid sized lathe.

It works really well for me, I wish it had a 6” or 8” tool rest instead of 4”

Everything is great except the tool rest, it’s junk! Cast iron, rough as a cobb.

After wanting a wood lathe for some time. And after a lot of research I purchased the nova Lathe. I wanted a lathe that I could learn on and not outgrow. The Nova 46300 comet II 12 in. x 16 1/2 in. Variable Speed Midi Wood Lathe is just that. There are many accessories that can be purchased as needed/wanted also many tutorials on you tube to learn from. It runs very smooth and quiet has a ¾ hp motor cast iron bed etc. check out the reviews and you tube. Go ahead and purchase then enjoy it.

Arrived well packaged and in good condition. Not much assembly needed. Lathe head stock and tail stock lined up perfectly. Lathe is quite, smooth and solid. I didn’t know if I would like the way the tail stock tightens to the bed, but now that I have tried it I like the bolt much better than the cam lever of my last lathe. This tail stock isn’t creeping loose. I have read some negative feedback about the tool rest. The tool rest comes totally painted, and you will need to file or sand the top edge smooth. This is common to every lathe. Tool rests get nicked and dinged and they need to be smoothed. I turned the inside of a bowl at about 600 rpm on the middle belt setting and I could sense it was struggling. I simply moved the belt to the low speed setting, turned the speed up to 600 rpm and had plenty of torque. This looks to be a high quality lathe. Works great with the Nova G3 reversible chuck with cole jaws attached (pictured). Home Depot had the lowest price by far on this product.

My Nova Comet II has only one problem that I can’t seem to solve. Although I’ve only used it for less than 10 hours, I can’t get rid of a vibration while turning. It seems to be either out of round, or has a weight distribution problem. I first turned a couple of desk pencil holders out of a piece of Russian Olive wood from a tree that fell in our yard early this summer. It was difficult to get a smooth cut until the units were below 2 inches in diameter and, even then, there was vibration and chattering. Yesterday I started on a bowl from an ash log that was about 6 1/2 inches in diameter. It was not round to start, so I wasn’t surprised at the vibration, but after I got it round it still vibrates like it doesn’t have even weight distribution. Also the cut isn’t smooth. Maybe the wood from both of these pieces is still too wet since they are fairly freshly cut. I’ll have to try some old pieces I have to see if things are better. Otherwise everything seems good. I ran it in reverse to see how it performs. It works very well and the sanding was the same as forward. The workmanship and alignment are excellent.

I have really enjoyed my nova so far it has preformed excellently. I have already turned a bowl with it!

The model I received was the older model, it’s a great lathe but not the same one pictures on the website. Home Depot knocked off $50, but and accessories will need to be purchased while they are still available.
