The Thunderbolt Optical Cable from Optical Cables by Corning is 98′ long and offers two independent channels that deliver 10 Gb/s of data each. It bonds the two channels to deliver 20 Gb/s speeds over long distances. With Thunderbolt support, you may daisy chain your system with up to six Thunderbolt devices at the same time. This cable is built with a zero-bend radius, which lets it be bent, squeezed, and tangled. In addition, it is thin, lightweight, and durable as well.

Does exactly what we’d hoped, good solution for a server room far away. Hugely expensive though, and we only went this route as it was our only option. Too expensive. You can buy a decent laptop for this amount.

This is round 3 for me with these cables. They are FREAKISHLY strong and stand up well to being pulled through conduit, which is a huge plus. The transceivers on either end, though, are apparently a huge weak spot, and when they die (and in my experience, they do about every 18 months), there’s no replacing that part. If this cable is your only option for getting Thunderbolt where you need it (in our case, from our studio’s machine room to the patch bay in the control room), then these cables are great and work flawlessly…until they don’t. I actually wish they sold these cables with a longer warranty or an extended service plan, because this is the third time I’ve shelled out $500 for a new cable since 2017. I’m holding my nose and clicking buy again, but like I said, while they work, they’re absolutely terrific.

It lasted 11 months before internally shorting out / melting. Very expensive cable to last that short of a period.

These cables are obscenely overpriced and only last about a year. Several attempts to contact Corning customer service went unanswered.

These cables are probably more expensive than gold but only Corning makes them. Overall the quality seems high, the cable itself is so thin and well coated it can give you a false sense of security. This is not copper! Don’t crimp or bend it too hard or it will snap! Sadly, I can’t say the same thing for the built-in optical transceivers at either end. My previous cable died in a little less than three years. The size of the transceivers is incredible but they heat up quickly and seem to burn out. If you need it, this is your only option. Buy it with an extended warranty if you can.
