The Thunderbolt Optical Cable from Optical Cables by Corning is 33′ long and offers two independent channels that deliver 10 Gb/s of data each. It bonds the two channels to deliver 20 Gb/s speeds over long distances. With Thunderbolt support, you may daisy chain your system with up to six Thunderbolt devices at the same time. This cable is built with a zero-bend radius, which lets it be bent, squeezed, and tangled. In addition, it is thin, lightweight, and durable as well.

I am now on my third 33′ optical cable. They have a “one year limited warranty’ and fail around 18 to 24 months. Still, when they work they are great and I cannot figure out any other solution given the 25′ or so that I need for a connection

These cables are great while they work. My client spent a few grand on a bunch of those, and they are starting to fail, in part because the Trashcan MacPro heats too much, but also because the plug it self it very loose in the receptacle. It is like pulling teeth to get Corning to answer or replace. My advise, they to use Ethernet to extend where possible. I wish Corning would be more helpful and ambitious to make this work as it literally is the only Thunderbolt extender out there.

Sadly for such an important piece of equipment, this is a flakey cable. I will need to replace mine for the THIRD time in three years, and I never touch move it around, and very rarely detach it from its port. This is unacceptable for such minimal physical manipulation. Failures with this cable occur significantly enough to unmount volumes and shut down computers in a kernel panic, and as frequently as once a month to several times a day when it’s truly dying. When the cable fails and becomes degraded enough, a volume (e.g. RAID drive) cannot stay connected and sputters like a car that won’t start up. Granted, it’s difficult to manufacture quality into this kind of length, but regardless, one should be able to rely on such a cable.

I’ve used this cable for over a year now and it allows me to keep my RAID on a different side of my office then my Mac Pro freeing up room on my desk. It is fast and is very long. Maybe too much for my needs right now but it is good to know that I can go longer if needed.

I use this cable to connect my macbook to my converter in my home studio. My old thunderbolt cable was only 10′ feet long so I constantly had to run back and forth from the desk to the recording area to run sessions. There is effectively 0 latency even with the long 33′ run, and everything sounds incredible. Couldn’t be happier with this product!
