When I got my iMac several months ago I was very happy with 8gb of RAM. At least I thought I was. I started using Photoshop in new ways and it was using more RAM. And using the hard drive in my iMac. So, I ordered 32GB in two 16GB sticks. What a difference. Everything seems to be running faster. I’ve yet to use 50% of the RAM I have and I’ve have yet to use the HD for anything relating to Photoshop.

This is a simple but significant upgrade I purchased a 27 iMac in December 2020 but with the base memory configuration of 8GB. An upgrade to 64 GB from Apple is significantly more expensive so I decided to install it myself. The process takes less than 15 minutes and I couldn’t be happier. The reconfigured iMac is lightning fast and the difference is quite noticeable. This upgrade is so easy. The money you save can be used to but other Apple products (from B&H).

I moved my original 8GB to bottom two slots and added these two 16GB memory to top two slots for a total of 40. There are installation videos online. The trickiest part is you place the screen down so you need to protect the table with a towel to protect the screen.

The memory works well as an upgrade for a 2020 iMac 5k. Works at the expected 2667 Mhz speed and works reliably. It is easy to install in an iMac. Adding one of these kits gets you from 8GB to 40GB. Thats five times better.

The memory upgrade was installed on a new 27 inch iMac on January 2021. The original iMac memory was removed and discarded before installing the new OWC memory. The machine is used every day all day long and is performing very well. I feel the upgrade was worth the money and time. OWC has an installation video for the memory upgrade and they are easy to contact for advice. If you prep and take your time, the upgrade will take you about 15 minutes.

you pay a bit extra for the brand name RAM for quality control and plug them in. Used to come with more instructions, including a cautionary to avoid static electricity, but those niceties seemed to have faded away.

These OWC RAM modules work with no problem, and the price is now competitive compared to Crucial’s equivalent product. The problem is that installing them in a Mac Mini requires very specific kinds of Torx screwdrivers that have a hollow center. These can’t be found at any big box hardware store. You have to buy an iFixit kit, so expect to spend another $26 on these tools. These tools (or equivalents) could have been included in this kit, considering the cost of the 64GB modules, but they aren’t included. Beware this hidden cost. It’s not really a gotcha, but it’s still a hassle.
