The 4TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive from Other World Computing features a compact and shock-resistant design with a 3-year limited warranty to ensure it stays functional and keeps your data safe. Inside its enclosure is a 3.5″ SATA hard drive with a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and a capacity of 4TB, so you’ll have plenty of space to save your favorite music, photos and movies.
The Mercury Elite Pro contains a USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1 port (which is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1), an eSATA port, and two 9-pin FireWire 800 ports (backwards compatible with FireWire 400 using an optional adapter). Along with a USB 3.0 Type-A to B cable, the Mercury Elite Pro also comes with Firewire 1394B 9-Pin to 9-Pin and eSATA cables.
Please note, this hard drive is not compatible with the NewerTech MAXPower RAID mini-SAS 6G-2e eSATA card.

First of all: I am a retired old guy with years of computer industry experience. What I have digitized: files; digital photos; music is about 10 TB worth of data. My preference is to have data physically under my control because I don’t trust security in the cloud and I don’t want to worry about upload download times given my awful local monopoly internet provider. Suffice it to say, Back Up is fairly major deity in my pantheon. This is my second Mercury Elite Drive — the previous was 14TB. My past is littered with WD, Seagate and La Cie drives, none of which seem to make it past three years of use, few make it past 2. Two years ago I tried Mercury: Plus: more reliable than the competition (big plus) and: an industrial strength USB connector on the drive, not the flimsy thing the competitors use Negative: Noisy — especially as a music server. But for home use and control of one’s information — the best on the market

Solid enclosure with decent ventilation. Has a proper, full size USB connector (not one of the flimsy mini/micro connectors that can snap easily). Has an actual on/off switch (so it won’t just randomly turn on/off if you connect/disconnect it but don’t actually want to change whether it’s on/off…). Relatively quiet, and comes with rubber feet to isolate from vibrations/bumps of whatever it’s sitting on.
