Add the power of RAID and USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C to your compatible Windows or Mac system with the Mercury Elite Pro Quad 4-Bay USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C RAID Enclosure from OWC / Other World Computing. Also compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and driven by included SoftRAID XT Lite software, this enclosure has been built with four SATA III drive bays that can each house a single 3.5″ or 2.5″ drive using included drive brackets. Available RAID modes include RAID 0, which offers increased read and write speeds, but no data redundancy, and RAID 1, which offers 1:1 data redundancy at a cost of 50% of the total storage capacity. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also supported, which allows the four drives to be used independently.
This volume will be recognized on systems running OS X 10.6 and later, as well as Windows 7 and later. Connectivity to your host system is achieved using an integrated 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port, and both USB Type-C to Type-C and USB Type-C to Type-A cables are included to help ensure compatibility with modern and legacy systems. To help ensure a smooth operating environment, the array is built using heat-dissipating aluminum, uses a cooling fan, and its included 100-240 VAC power supply runs at 50/60 Hz to help ensure worldwide compatibility. Also included is a power cable and two front panel keys.

The first unit that I received was defective. The fan did not work. This was easily replaced by B&H and so far the second unit functions very well. The hard drives stay cool under load and the speed is snappy. The only issue is that the fan doesn’t spin down when the drives are not in use, even overnight. After I’m finished, I simply turn the unit off after the fans have run for a while to cool the drives. The fan noise is somewhat audible but not overbearing at all. This works well for my needs and it looks great with my 5K iMac.

I rely on a NAS for most of the clients in the house to connect to for pulling finished content but for editing work on my laptop, having direct disks connected to the laptop is necessary. Since my laptop dock is leveraged by multiple laptops I was forced to keep the disks JBOD so they all can use the disks (software RAID versus hardware RAID in the actual storage device). Don’t forget to set the USB port power management on your PC to NOT power down to save power or else the spin up and down of the disks will drive you crazy.

First one arrived without a functioning fan. Returned(Thank you B&H for the most excellent return/replace service.) New unit works like a champ with two caveats: Fan and or noise seems to go up and down the whole time while on. Keep getting message one of the drives or sometime in history has failed and replace NOW. Drive mounts right after that and runs great. Cheap and easy RAID for the budget conscious. Time will tell.

This product has a noisy fan and the power supply inside the unit makes quite a humming sound even after getting it replaced.

Surprisingly quiet, powers down drives, does exactly what I need. I ripped apart all my external drives and placed the hard drives into this unit and it works perfectly. It really simplified my home server setup. I even get way faster transfer speeds from one of the drives (looking at you fantom drives).

if you just want an enclosure for your hard drives, as i did, this is a fine product. the build quality is pretty good. if you are planning to use this as a raid array on macOS, you have come to the wrong place. the raid software they offer for this thing is garbage. would not even start on my mac without crashing.

I purchased this thinking it would be a great archive solution. After getting it replaced with an RMA there is quite a bit of coil whine when it comes to this product. My guess is it’s the cheap power supply. It’s super loud and if you use this in a bedroom office stay away from this product.

I love the SoftRAID software. And I expected more honestly from this enclosure. It feels cheap. Metal edges are sharper than you’d expect, and sliding in and out the drives makes a scraping sound. But my main complaint is the noise. Simply having the power cord attached makes the power supply engage and it makes a hum. But then powered on it makes a lot more noise. In summery. It works. SoftRAID is great. But I wish I could turn town the volume.
