We have both a MAC and Windows computer systems. The burning of a disc is not intuitive and the OWC help desk not helpful. After numerous trial and error attempts we figured out how to burn discs. Now that we know how to do this we are pleased with the data disks created. This device does work with both MAC and Windows.

Initially would play a CD but wouldn’t rip it. After several tries it wouldn’t even play a CD or communicate with the computer at all. I shut down the unit and my computer several times to be sure it was a fresh start but it would not work. Am having to return it as B&H rep says it’s likely defective.

I had to replace an older blu-ray read/writer that quit working and this one has worked out perfect so far. I usually rip blu-rays with it and then convert them to a file format that is friendly for my Apple TV since I don’t own an actual blu-ray player for my TV. I’ve had no issues digitizing the discs and it costs about half of what I paid for the last one. Go figure!

Wanted a better external dvd drive and could not even find the flimsy cheap one I had after moving. This one is rock solid. I can buy inexpensive 50GB r/w discs or expensive 100GB write only archival discs plus all the blu-rays etc. work. Feels like a heavy brick, very solid. Using Digola’s free Door Control tray icon I don’t even have to use the front button to open or close it. Only a couple of mnfctr’s make these burners. Mine is an LG. Even comes with instructions on how to replace the drive.

I absolutely love it! The player built into my laptop quit working. All I had to do with my new external drive was plug and play and all my headaches went away. Thank you for a great product!

I am digitizing my very large music collection to FLAC and needed a CD reader that was the fastest I could find. This is a 48X reader for audio CDs. Two (2) minutes per CD to record. So something like 40 hours of recording. It is expensive but halving the time needed from any other CD reader was well worth it. B&H are great to work with and I have bought lots from them. Always satisfied.

Easy to install. Mac OSX 10.11.5 (El Capitan) immediately acknowledged the drive. I am using Roxio’s Toast IT Titanium 14. I burned data files to the Verbatim BD-R DL (50gb) with no problem. When I tried burning data files to the Verbatim BD-R XL (100gb), it kept giving me the following error at 34% of writing: The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR Sense Code = 0x0C WRITE ERROR I unsuccessfully burned 2 100gb Blu-Ray discs. Suddenly, the Toast It software popped-up a message stating that if I am experiencing errors, to download the update. So, I updated the software. I successfully burned data files on to the Verbatim BD-R XL (100gb) discs. In addition, I set the burning speed to 4x, instead of Best. Burning large amounts of data is time consuming. Burning 225gb of data took approximately 5 hours. The manufacture claims that this drive supports M-discs. We will see when I get around to purchasing those discs.

I bought this as an upgrade to a smaller portable Samsung BD-writer that would not work at all with my Mac and only barely worked with my PC. This is a truly plug and play device, very solidly built and as soon as I plugged it in to my Mac and turned it on it was ready to go to work. Burned a blu-ray containing my recently completed feature film in just about 10 minutes – very fast write speed and the disc plays flawlessly. Nothing but good things to say about it so far. And it looks nice on my editing desk too! Only thing I can nitpick is that it advertises that it comes with free labeling software of some kind which didn’t appear to be included. To me this is no big deal, as there are tons of free templates online for this and I already have a pretty robust solution for disc and insert labeling. But just in case this was something that you are expecting or needing just be advised it does not come with it. Search online for photoshop based templates for labeling and you won’t go wrong.

I purchased this unit about 1-1/2 years ago. I had nothing but trouble with it. Over several times, OWC failed to help me to correct the problems. Finally I sent in the drive in to them and they told me it failed. This was, of course, after the warranty had expired! I would not recommend this product to anyone. Don’t buy it! Get the Pioneer instead and save yourself a lot of pain.

Using this on a 2019 Mac Pro. Burns discs fast and looks great. Unfortunately, I was not aware that the Mac OS would no longer recognize my hundreds of HFS CDs and DVDs which was the main reason I bought it… THANKS AGAIN APPLE!

I’ve tried other external drives that were cheaper and they always burn out within a couple of weeks and are painfully slow. I finally went with something a little more robust and it has been great so far. As a bonus, if for some reason the drive fails, I can replace it with another standard size drive for $50-70 in the enclosure. Very happy with my purchase.

I did miss having a built in reader/player, the Apple external drives need to go directly into the Mac, not a hub, and is hard wired with a short usb cable. Being powered, this drive can use a hub, and has a generous wire. Looking forward to larger storage options with Blu-Ray too.

I much prefer a tray to those devices that suck in a disc and never cough it up again. (May Ma ini, e.g.) Since the superdrive in my Ma ini died (and Apple doesn’t build them into anything any more), and since my MacBook Pro that did have a working drive died on New Year’s eve, I was left with only the drive in my Mac G4, which still works perfectly after all these years. But even that wonderful machine will not last forever, so I needed a solid reliable burner, and this one also does M-discs! (Now that the Apple product lifecycle is the incredible shrinking ripoff, and the constant useless system upgrades that make everything you already paid for obsolete, I am looking for alternatives). This is a great start.
