Have bought this to use as a reader.A reasonbly price ‘player’ of watching blu rays, dvds and to listen to cds.I have no concern about speed of the burning process as the faster you burn, there will be a high chance of a buffer over run.Never the less,as far as burning onto blank disc,I don’t use them.I am using this to rip CDs and DVDs onto external harddrive.I have discovered that the external box can accomodate other brands of drive. And it is far cheaper to just buy a replacement drive than a standalone ‘rom’. Besides you do not have to worry about the lack of usb power as this product comes with a separate power supply and will not draw the power from the usb power thus it will not damage your equipment. However,if the external psu does gets damage after long term of use (wear and tear),I can always get one of those ‘audiophile’ psu for this external box dvd.Psu that comes with this,is multi voltage. The box can also use to accomodate a harddrive besides CD rom,DVD rom and Blu Ray.But you need a metal cage to accomodate a 3.5 drive and it is not practical as the drive will heat up so,it is better a buy a stand alone external drive as they have a built in fan. This box does not have one.On a contrary, fan will introduce noise into the system. So to sum up,yes it is a nice product and get one while it is still available as no one makes an aluminium case these days with a separate psu.

I bought this unit to back up my bigger 4k raw video files and finished films. So far, this has worked like a charm. I plugged it into my 2018 iMac computer and no extra software was required. I am running 10.14.6 op system on iMac! Fast and easy to use.

Jeez, it’s been awhile since I bought an external drive that was built like this. I think it was an APS Magneto Optical drive, and the discs could hold 230MB each. I already have a CD/DVD burner, but I wanted to step up to Blu-Ray (I buy Lossless ALAC files online and wanted to back up a bunch). I knew that it didn’t come with software and that I might have to buy Toast. However, I was able to burn a folder of files straight from the finder, I put the disc into my read only Blu Ray drive and it mounted with no problem. Happy with my purchase.

It’s competent and all that. But it’s not superior to any other I have. I do a lot of drag&drop writing to UDF discs, which is constantly prone to write hangups. This drive is just as susceptible. Does anyone else use that method? Pioneer handles that best. I actually bought this to burn JVC Taiyo-Yuden discs, which clearly stated that you must use a new drive which can burn at 16x. But the JVC were failing on me in all my drives including this one. Now later I’m finding that I need to use a speed under 4x, and any of my drives can do it. So much for the stern warning. I haven’t had this one for a year, so that’s when the quality test would start.

I’ve only had the unit about 2 weeks but it is built solidly and comes with an LG drive. Works great. I’m tempted to buy another one simply because optical discs (unfortunately) are being phased out.

I was disappointed to receive my product only to discover that it requires software which is sold separately. It was not advertised as such. I tried three different pieces of software that did not work and then B&H recommended a fourth piece which I purchased in vain. I returned the Blu-Ray Reader/Writer.

This is a true plug-n-play product for IMACS. If it weren’t for the fact that it’s pretty noisy, I would give it 5 stars.

For me, the OWC Mercury Pro external USB 3.0 reader/writer was plug and play using Windows 10. I’ve experienced no difficulties. The writer successfully burned pictures to M-Disc DVD-R and 1080i movies to BD-R. I’m happy with my purchase.

Like many serious computer users, I have terabytes of important and irreplaceable data, including photos, videos and many other files. I had been storing this data on a mix of 2.5 portable USB drives and SD cards, but after almost losing some of the most important material due to sudden HDD and SD card failures, I decided I needed a stable, long-term backup solution. Once you lose data, you realize how important archival media are, and that the only practical archival media options for small office and home use today are Blu-Ray disks or their even longer-lasting Millenium Disk versions. But to use them, you’ll need an external Blu-Ray drive easily moved from computer to computer, and carefully stored when not in use. For backup applications like that, this Mercury Pro External USB 3 Blu-Ray drive is absolutely ideal. The case is rugged and elegant brushed aluminum, and has thick rubber feet for a solid, vibration-free footing. There is an external power supply to provide the full power necessary for high-speed disk burning, and the added professional flourish of a sturdy, rocker-type power switch on the rear panel. A heavy-duty, full size USB 3 Type B socket is also located at the rear, and a USB 3 cable with a Type B plug on one end and a Type A USB connector for your computer on the other is supplied. Finally, the enclosure contains LG’s latest Blu-Ray/DVD/CD drive, which is quiet, fast, and reads and burns every optical disk type and format. It turned out to be highly compatible with burn software as well. For example, using the open-source operating system Linux Mint 18.1 Serena with the free, lightweight disk burning application Xfburn v0.5.4, I was able to backup 20 GB of photos to a Verbatim #97457 25 GB BD-R disc on the first try. Verbatim uses an exclusive, high-stability, long-lasting M.A.B.L. (Metal Ablative Layer) to store recorded data on those disks, so they are great for data you want to keep for a long time. The very first burn I tried worked perfectly, and all of the files recorded on the Verbatim disk were verified as 100% identical to the originals by the Linux program rhash. Keep in mind that the Linux Mint Serena OS is almost five years old and nearing end-of-support, and that the burning application Xfburn is not the latest version, either. So I consider the drive to be very compatible. Since it worked flawlessly with such old software right out-of-the-box, it’s also likely to work well with whatever your favorite Blu-Ray burning systems and programs are. In summary, I could not be more pleased with this OWC Mercury Pro drive and its sturdy, professional enclosure. At B&H’s bargain price, OWC’s External Blue-Ray drive offers a level of build quality and value seldom seen in products today. I believe this is the best external Blu-Ray drive you can buy, and give it the highest possible recommendation. Even if the drive itself suffers a failure after many years of heavy use, the enclosure’s a standard form factor which can accept any new drive up to 7 long.

I was concerned that there would be issues with the various DVD capacities and options but this Reader/Writer handles everything I asked and needed it to do. Now I am also able to use M disc which was a big part of my decision to upgrade to this model. Terrific purchase at a reasonable price.

I’m very pleased with this drive for burining DVDs. So far I’ve just used it for burning single layer 4.7gb DVDs and watching one DVD (playback). First the look of the device is great, the aluminium casing looks great. Second the noise level is subtle – not distracting, lastly the speed for burning DVDs is much faster than the USB powered drive I’m replacing with it so overall I’m very pleased.

I had a box made by OWC with a hard drive, and SD reader port, and a blue-ray drive, all in one box about the size of a Mac mini. I never got disks that were really clear of problems, and it often rejected the disk for no reason. This OWC Mercury Pro is MUCH, MUCH better, and I’ve had zero problems with it in the few months I’ve had it. I recommend it.
