I purchased to burn Blue Ra y DVD from my Mac Power Book. I thought I might need to use my compressor software also, but I did not need any other software. I plugged in the OWC unit and was able to immediately burn blue ray DVD’s right out of the box.

The bluray burner is great, I had to make them for screening purposes and they looked and sounded great.

This is a great burner! It is very fast, both in reading and in writing to discs. After my 7-year-old iMac finally bit the dust I needed an optical drive for my current set-up. This is a HUGE upgrade from the Apple Superdrive I’ve been using for years. The speed difference is so noticeable that I can’t believe I was ever ok with using the superdrive for as many years as I did. Even if you don’t write to M-discs regularly, having the option to write important files to a medium that is a truly archival in the long-term is great. You can still use this drive for standard blu-rays, dvds, and cds as you normally would. M-disc is just an additional option that you now have and I would argue that, when needed, it’s great to have that option. I want to make this last point because there seems to be some confusion on the topic– I was confused myself when I was researching this drive because I’m not an expert on optical media: — You should know that you DO NOT need any additional software to burn to blu-ray or m-discs. In OS X, you only need additional software for the playback of blu-rays because of the video format. I think the confusion on this topic is happening because people keep mentioning Roxio Toast and some bundles online include that software with this drive or at least a discount on it. Toast is a suite of advanced tools for DVD or Blu-Ray authoring, but you do not need it to simply to burn data to a blu-ray using this drive– you can do that using nothing but Finder. If you plug this drive in and insert a blu-ray or Mdisc, it will show up in Finder like any other disc. To test this I burned to a 25GB blu-ray Mdisc right away using only OS X’s built in tools and it worked immediately. If anybody out there is on the fence about getting this drive because you want to burn to blu-rays and Mdiscs but aren’t sure if you need additional software to do so, you don’t– everything you need for doing that is in the box. I hope this is helpful.

Totally reliable. Mounts BD discs consistently and quickly. Not finicky. Quiet. Hands down best BD drive I’ve used.

The cabinet is out of this world. It is built like a tank. Retro 1970’s heavy duty quality. Drive was easy to connect and use. I have loaded a few hundred CD’s without a single issue. Cannot ask for more.

hope it keeps on trucking…big…heavy…not thin like most of the rest which gives one the feeling this thing is built like a tank and at the rest might just be cheaply made plastic ready to break..

Very sturdy box! B&H did a good job sending, the machine from NYC to Cordoba in Argentina. i just have to find out how to make it work with my Mac-mini. I received 2 bd’s as well, but do not know yet what I should do with those. They are empty, although I expected software to make the machine work?!

If you are looking for a ‘plug and play’ CD/DVD/BLU-RAY unit, OWC is the way to go. Never a problem and completely reliable. I burn a LOT of discs each week, CD and DVD format, and this unit has never let me down. In fact I have two…one for home and one for the studio. Highly recommend OWC products and this burner in particular.

Its a little bulkier compare to other external optical drives but works out of the box with my new ImacPro. Works also with windows based pc. So far DVDs and Blu rays work perfectly with ImacPro with the right software. The sotware included to make labes its 32 bit which 64 bit is require for new apple OS but still works for now. This package came together with ImacPro that I bought fro BH Photo. It fits righ under the ImacPro so its not noticeable. So far no complaints.

This drive worked very well for loading huge programs from DVD to a new PC running Windows Pro 10 using the USB 3.1 ports on both devise. (Note: OWC also has a newer model that has additional output ports, including fire wire.)

Recently I decided to digitize my entire DVD library and put the old DVDs into storage, but my old DVD drive was slow and sounds like it’s wearing out. The Mercury pro does the job in half the time. Very fast and reliable, and I love how solidly built this device is. Very pleased with my purchase!

it does it reliably, and speedily enough for me. I wish it came with a longer USB cord, but that’s so easy to replace. I’m not qualified to speak on Reader speeds, but it reads fast enough for my needs. I haven’t tried the Write function yet. My old blu-Ray reader/writer lasted years, and finally died.

Very pleased with this product. Seems to made far better than the Mac Superdrives or the Pioneer, admittedly it’s more expensive than either. But it plays well and loads fast, I haven’t burned anything, but I have no need to at the moment. For those complaining that it does not play blu-ray on mac. That is apple’s fault, regardless of what drive you have, you will have to get seperate software to play it. Steve Jobs himself called Blu-ray a box of hurt and made it that way for mac users, this is the one issue with Mac and trying to always replace an oldler technology, without understanding some of the things that are good about those technologies. I would recommend Mac Blu Ray Player by Mac Go, you can get a free standard version or the pro with a free trial, it’s only 40 dollars which is much cheaper than most and it is quite good for what you are paying for. As far as the OWC drive, you do have to plug it in to an outlet, at the same time, that allows for on/off switch which still conserves more power than simply putting impluging on that only has one with a usb and a native system with out the need to plug into an outlet.
