The Mercury On-The-Go Pro Triple Interface Portable Case from OWC / Other World Computing is a portable hard drive enclosure that features FireWire 800 and USB 3.0/2.0 connectivity. It can fit any drive up to 12.5mm in size and up to 2.2TB in capacity.
The enclosure also features a dual processor for parsing drive data – an Oxford 944/ASMedia 1051e chipset. This allows both FireWire 800 and USB compatibility through a single enclosure. This feature also ensures compatibility for both Mac and PC users.
The plug-and-play Mercury On-The-Go also includes all the cables you need, so you can start using it right out of the box. Although it is powered through the USB or FireWire ports, an optional adapter is sold to keep power going when your computer’s power isn’t enough.

I had problems with the HD sensor of an old iMac and the solution was to put an external SSD, but the mac version had no USB 3.0 ports, but the Firewire in this case solved the problem

Just installed my drive and went to work. Use for a testing unit to startup other computers and run test utilities.

I have purchased several of these cases as I’ve upgraded internal drives in laptops. Purchased this case at the same time as Crucial M550 1 TB SSD from B&H. Case is excellent, and easy to install drives. Case is bus powered, either with Firewire or USB. Excellent quality product, comes with USB and Firewire cables as well as soft case. Nice compact design. While there are less expensive cases that are USB only, it was worth it to me to pay more to use Firewire since I cloned the internal HD to the SSD before swapping the drives and Firewire makes it faster. Having a good quality external case for my old HD allows me to maintain this as an external bootable drive just in case.

Using the enclosure for external drive on MacBook Pro 13 unibody. Wanted the Firewire 800 speed for an external bootable drive. Found it best to follow instructions of NOT screwing the hard drive down to the heat sink(even though there were enough screws in the package to do so). As it turned out two of the drives I was using were bad so it was easy to just open the end-cap and slide the I/O board with hard drive out to replace then slide it back in. The two end-caps (one permanent the other has screws to hold it in place) hold parts inside fairly well with a 2.5 5400 rpm SATA hard drive. This case is not intended to be water-proof, shock-proof or dust-proof etc. Just an enclosure for an external hard drive best used laying flat and still. Happy with the fact that package includes USB 2 to USB 3 cable as well as Firewire 800 cable. device is capable of daisy-chaining Fireire 800 devices since it has two ports. Included is a pleather carrying case. Has a tiny on-off switch. Case is see-through clear plastic with reasonably thick construction. The blue LED when turned on is a good visual cue not to shake or move the enclosure as the hard-drive is on and spinning. Careful not to tighten side screws to hold the end-cap in place is they may strip or crack the plastic piece.

I Purchased this in order to expand the capacity of my MacBook Pro storage. My intention was to add an additional 2 TB of SSD storage. I was also looking for a FireWire 800 interface as my laptop is getting a little aged at this point. This housing fulfilled all of my needs and allowed me to add the external storage. Now I have ample room for back up and onboard storage.

Easy to use. I like the on and off switch. Great product the best I’ve ever use.

The rare combination of USB3.1 and FireWire800. Need to buy IEEE Firewire 9 pin to 4 pin conversion cable to work with FireWire400 port on my old computer. The transfer speed is about 5 times faster than USB2.0.

I use this enclosure with a 2015 5K iMac in lieu with a 750GB Crucial SSD, as a boot drive over USB 3. The speed is great, about 2.5x faster than the internal 7200 rpm regular HDD (but that also depends on the SSD type, it’s not even the fastest kind). I have also used it for a while with a 2010 27 iMac, also as a boot drive but over FireWire 800 (as that model only has a slower yet USB 2), and the speed gain was fascinating, there was no need to crack open the machine and put the SSD inside (as was originally planned). The product itself is very nicely built and easy to assemble. Somewhat thicker than other similar enclosures I have, but not by much. The included faux leather pouch is quite fancy too!
