The Mercury Elite Pro Dual 2-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Enclosure from OWC / Other World Computing features two bays and two Thunderbolt 2 ports so you can create a direct-attached storage solution for Windows and Mac systems. The two bays are capable of holding 2.5″/3.5″ SATA-based hard drives as well as SSDs. Once optional drives are installed, you can configure your drives in a RAID 0 array, which stripes the data across both drives, to provide speeds of up to 474 MB/s. You can also set the drives in a RAID 1, SPAN, or individual mode utilizing the hardware RAID controller. Other notable features include an aluminum enclosure and a quiet fan to cool the drives and internal components.
To keep up with the fast transfer speeds from the drives, the dual Thunderbolt 2 ports have a 20 Gbps bi-directional channel for each port. The Mercury Elite Pro also has a USB 3.0 connection for greater compatibility with a wider range of systems. Moreover, Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 cables are included so you can start storing and editing right out of the box.

I am using this with an 18TB Hitachi drive to connect it to my old Mac Pro via USB 3.0. It works great. The enclosure is not very large and has stand with the non-slip base. It has been very fast and quiet, just what I had hoped it would be. And it looks nice on my desk.

This replaced an older, super cheap enclosure I bought years ago – that cheap one was never very reliable. This OWC enclosure has been rock solid and very quiet. Worth the money.

This is a nice looking enclosure, looked like a good option for external hard drive. I was very surprise to see read/write speeds only around 30 MB/s on a brand new hard drive that I put in there. This was unacceptable. When I had the same drive put in another enclosure the speeds were around 180-200 MB/s. Not a good option to buy.

Quality of enclosure seems top-notch and it was available with the hard-to find eSATA port. I bought it to use with a 4 TB WD black HD to add capacity to my DirecTV DVR. Unfortunately It didn’t work well (picture hangs up and pixelates a lot) but it’s a HD compatibility issue with the DirecTV box, not the OWC enclosure. It did the same thing when I mounted the HD internally. I’ll use enclosure and HD for backup with my desktop.

The drive works as advertised; however, it’s LOUD on all accounts. The fan noise is loud when the drive is idle. In addition, it’s even louder when the drive is working and being accessed. I would not have purchased this if I knew how loud it is!

Beautiful design, all-metal construction, easy to install the hard drive. I like that the hard drive mount screws have rubber grommets for noise reduction and shock absorption. I’ve purchased cheaper hard drive enclosures, but never again after buying this one. You get what you pay for.

Worked fine for a year. About a month ago it started disconnecting. It was once a week, then once a day, then it lasted about 30 minutes, and now it won’t connect at all. Tried different hard drives, ports, cables, etc. with no luck. I recommend getting something else.
