This little thing is a powerhouse for video storage, and the fact that it has passthrough thunderbolt is a nice bonus. The only downside is the fan, which never turns off, and is louder than most spinning hard drive RAID enclosures I’ve used. Best kept in a corner away from your ears. Also, be wary of using SSDs that have built in heat sinks, they’ll either be a tight fit, or not fit at all.

Just start using it. Well built, Compact and easy to use. But a little noisy if you have it near it will bother

Functionally, this thing is great. Easy to install the SSD modules, SoftRaid simplifies setup and the transfer speeds are great. But the surprisingly loud fan is a drag. I would expect it to have a variable-speed fan, slowing down when the load it light; but it doesn’t. I have a quiet studio and find the constant noise disturbing. I’ll be contacting OWC to see if they have any ideas.

Super fast for SSD drives. Small and easy to use. A winner! Legendary B & H fast delivery.

I wanted an enclosure that would hold 3 NVME Blades for a RAID-0 work drive and one for a clone of my boot volume. The Express 4M2 gives me that. The Thunderbolt and Display port pass through are a bonus. The Display Port is version 1.2, not 1.4, but that has not caused any issues with my LG34GK950F ultra wide. Note – there are 2 versions of the base unit without NVMEs. One for $349 that comes with SoftRAID software and one for $249 that does not. I made the mistake of buying the more expensive version. I didn’t need the included software. Luckily B&H has a really fair return policy. My only gripe about the enclosure is the fan. It’s not so bad that I would call it noisy but I definitely notice it and I wish it was quieter. I think moving it farther away should basically solve that issue.

I finally pulled the trigger on the 4M2 and loaded it up with EVO Plus 2TB drives. This is for video editing btw. It’s small and it’s fast, but it is crazy loud. I am not someone who is hyper sensitive about workstation noise, I have a high tolerance typically. This unit as others have mentioned is loud, especially for such a small unit. When I reorganize my workstation next time around, I will find a quieter location for this unit if possible.

Brought two of these Enclosures with Samsung Evo 970 Plus NVMe drives – hoping to get the 2800 mbs speeds that OWC claim. Soft Raid was a waste of money, as it didn’t work with M1 Macs. Had to use Mac Disk Utility instead to create the Raid. We could only achieve speeds of 1135 mbs. Very disappointed to get less than half their rated speed. Note. Soft Raid needs to be installed on any devices if you want to use in different places. Very annoying to discover this after purchasing, not clearly mentioned. Contacted OWC support – they are very unhelpful. They could not offer any useful suggestions to get better speeds. We found a page on OWC website saying Samsung Evo 970 Plus drives may be incompatible. OWC Support could not confirm, they were intentionally unhelpful and slow to respond to any questions. For 2 months now we have these enclosures performing at less than half the rated speed. Wish we could return them and buy an alternative. Very disappointing… Purchase with caution..!

Amazing Product, Serves the purpose but few things to know is about the horrible fan noise and they ship the product with SoftRaid XT version 6, you need to pay additional $75 to upgrade for the latest version 7 !! Just be aware of it
