Removing the lid from a recently-opened can can be a delicate task of pinching and twisting to avoid sharp edges. By cutting on the side of the can, below the edge, the OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener leaves no sharp edges behind. The sharp, hardened stainless steel cutting wheel avoids can contents and stays clean.
- Non-slip handles
- Patented side-wind mechanism cuts easily
- Lid pliers allow for no-touch lid removal
- Easy-turn, soft-grip knob

This Oxo Can Opener (Model 1049953) works well after some learning. This is my first “Smooth Edge” can opener, and it took some getting used to. It’s extremely comfortable in the hand, and obviously well made – as OXO products tend to be. My wife and I both used it, and she liked it immediately. I found it awkward to hold it “at the front” of the can, rather than along the side (see photo), and still have a devil of a time aligning the narrow gear correctly on the can’s rim to have it engage. Once engaged it turns smoothly, but there is no visual indication of the progress, so I can only tell I’m done by the change in force needed to turn the cutting wheel. At that point the lid and rim should pull off easily, and there is a miniature set of “pliers” built into the unit to grab the rim and pop the top (see photo). The result is certainly a smoother cut with no sharp edge. Choosing it is obviously a personal preference; my wife will continue to use it while I’ll stick with a more traditional can opener. It’ comes at a hefty price but I’m sure it will last a long, long time.

we bought one a couple years ago, and it didn’t work well at all, & returned it. when we read some of the recent reviews this year, we were surprised=maybe the company made improvements, or we only had a rare lemon?!this current can opener works well; a good backup to our electric can opener.

The can opener works great. Open cans easily both big and small. Cranking is effortless. Love the pinchers on the side to remove the lid.

It’s a bit tricky to figure out how to attach it to the can, but once attached is works very well.

Finally, a can opener that continues to work! My mother has a cheap can opener she purchased in the 80s that still works perfectly. I am on my 4 in 8 years. And while, yes, I do open a fair amount of cans, that’s the job it’s meant for. My previous one only lasted 4 weeks, and 5 cans before it just stopped working. Enter the OXO Smooth Edge Can Opener. I’ve tried a smooth edge style before, and it was only so-so, and I was eager to see how OXO would stack up. Finally I’ve found a can opener that works! I’ve opened maybe a cozen cans already, and it works just as well now as it did on the first can. There is a little side lever to lift the top without actually touching the can. No sharp edges were left behind, the handle is very comfortable and easy to turn and you can even place the top back on for a makeshift lid.It is VERY large, and something to take into consideration, as it easily takes up double the space of a traditional can opener.Time will tell its it lasts 30 years, but with OXO’s satisfaction guarantee, as well as my previous experience with their brand, this was clearly worth trying.

Took me a bit to figure it out. But it works great.

This is a really good can opener and has a safety factor with no sharp edges on the lid. It is a little pricey.

Excellent can opener that leaves smooth edge around the top of the can. No chance of cutting your fingers. A little awkward at first but follow the directions and you’ll get the hang of it quickly.

It took me awhile to get used to it but once I got the used to it, it worked well. It cuts the can on the outside of the rim and leaves the smooth edge. For me, the handle was harder to turn on a tuna fish can as compared to a soup can. Very satisfied with my purchase.

Our old can opener just didn’t work anymore and we wanted a new one that is easier to use than our old one and didn’t leave sharp edges on the can. I’m happy to say that this opener works so smoothly that it really is effortless. It even has a little lid gripper that grabs the lid for removal from the can after it’s opened. I’m super happy with it and hope to have it for a long long time.

the directions for use of the product were self-explanatory without hoops to decipher. surprisingly, the can-opener worked very well the first time I tried it.

It works well and does what it is supposed to do. If you are used to the traditional style can opener, this takes a couple times to get used to as what was once intuitive now needs to be relearned. But it does seem well designed and safer, eliminating the former sharp edges of the traditional style.

After trying 6 other can openers of varying prices, this was my 7th try. It is my final try as I have finally found a can opener I can live with and will use. It works every time, removing the lid cleanly without sharp edges. The knob is easy to turn, and has worked on all of my cans.

Seems to work o.k., but will have to see how long until it gets dull and won’t cut anymore. Some openers don’t last too long. Time will tell.

Takes a little getting used to the switch but once you do you won’t go back to the old school can openers.
