We’ve had our whole house Pelican water system for 5 years and are happy with it. We have clean, fresh tasting water. They recommend replacing the carbon every 5 years, so I bought new media. The package arrived intact with a bag of carbon, the parts, and instructions (apparently the first package was damaged by the shipper in transit and returned to Pelican before we received it). The instructions were concise and accurate. So it appeared that replacing the media would be simple and straightforward. It turns out that it’s not so simple. Be aware that the tank with water and media weighs over 170 pounds. Moving the tank from its location in the garage to a place where the water could be drained and carbon removed was a challenge. There are no handles. Manhandling the tank to drain the water without dumping out the carbon is difficult. Finally, extracting the media for disposal and inverting the tank to wash it out the remainder is both messy and requires more than two hands.Filling the tank with carbon is easier than the previous steps. But be aware of things like tank placement relative to hose access, leaving it stand for two days, cleanup, and moving the 170+ pound tank back into place for reinstallment. Also consider how you’re going to put 30 pounds of granulated carbon, which is about a cubic foot or so, from a plastic bag into an unstable funnel that’s five feet above the ground. I scooped about 50% with a quart container and the remainder was poured awkwardly from the bag. Be prepared for some cleanup. As I write this, I’m in the two day waiting period to season the carbon, so there’s no more story to tell. But I don’t anticipate any installation problems (knock on wood). In five years will I do it again? The pain will have gone away by then, but I’m not sure. Perhaps I’ll hire a plumber.

I am happy that the only problem my system has was apparently a worn out media. It was not super easy to replace, but once done, it was really worth it. The water is clean and pure again.

The system really works for great water. Changing the media was difficult.

Bought this kit and fitted it all using the instructions. BEWARE the tank is very heavy when filled with water. I had to get the unit out of my basement and up 8 concrete steps to empty in the yard. I used a sack truck and an old carpet and rope to secure the tank. It was not easy. emptying was ok and refilling ok. then filling with water before refitting made the tank heavy again. BEWARE. The kit worked ok, EXCEPT an attachment for the exit to a hose would have been useful. I had to cobble something up. getting the tank back down the flight of concrete steps into the basement took two people. Fill and flush, stand for 48hrs, back flush etc. all done outside. All back refitted. So far so good. EXCEPT: an attachment for the exit to a hose would have been very useful.

Francisco did an amazing job. It nice to see a technician who finally cares about doing the job right. He found a problem with my system, and didn’t leave until it was fixed right.

Pros: It does what it’s suppose to especially when you’re using less than quality water supply. The instructions are very clear an concise.Cons: I believe there should be a “recommendation” about running your washing machine for one cycle without clothes after the 72 sitting perion. I found carbon residue on the water dispenser after the first load of clothes. There wasn’t anymore after wiping it off and running subsequent loads.NOTES for you DIY types: (1) When you replaced the media yourself…its messy. You must take your time in trying to capture the used carbon without it getting all over the place. Except a mess but as long as you clean as you go it will not stain the concrete. (2) The instructions don’t say it but I did it and recommend during the 48 hr or more soaking (I soaked it for 72) you place a used rag over the connection points…it will keep the little bugs from flying in and capture the carbon emitting from the cylinder. (3) Before you are ready to hook the system up to the main water I recommend all your laundry is done so the 72 hour waiting period once it’s hooked up doesn’t effect the family’s laundry schedule. :-). (4) After soaking for 72 hrs and waiting another 72 before running more than 3 gallons per minute, I found carbon residue on the water dispenser in the washing machine after the first load. I recommend you run your washing machine for 1 load without clothes then clean the residue from the dispenser and you should be fine after.

We have completed thee weeks of operation, with “0” reading on the chlorine measurement testers. Perfect for our home and large Koi pond. Warning…the charcoal tank is heavy…place on driveway for charcoal removal and reloading. We found a “hand truck” to be quite valuable.

I battled constantly with the idea of making my own mixture. But the problem is that Pelican’s mixture is right and I didn’t want to get caught up in doing the “not right” mixture. As you will notice when you change the media there are different types…3 or 4 as I counted. This concoction they’ve developed allows the water to flow not get jammed up. One thing I wish Pelican would do is…post a picture of the expended media so I could have a better idea how good or bad my water is. I did see where the metals and the chemicals in the water reacted a blueish hue… I guess I should clear up. I installed the filter in 2012 replaced it in 2016. As far as I could tell…the media could have only been 10% expended. Meaning that in 3 years of water usage (broken water hose while at work 4 to 6 showers a day washing cooking watering the lawn…etc) I still had 90% more element to “burn” through. Being safe as I usually am with my family’s health I changed it early. My next house will have this system…

I recently replaced the media (Charcoal) in my PC1000. The instructions provided by Pelican were very good and the only hard part was emptying the old media due to the weight of the tank full of water. After removing the water by siphoning it out, I was able to complete the job without issue.

I was somewhat skeptical of the process for changing the media in my PC1000, but it went very smooth with no issues. Thank you!

U tube video was very helpful. Make sure you clean all of the carbon residue from Threads with water before replacing the tank top valve

We have had this water filter for four years and decided to replace the filter early due to some lead pipe work, and can I say wow, the 48hrs that we had to go without the filter while we were changing the medium was a fantastic reminder of what this filter is removing. Everyone in the house was commenting on the horrible chorine smell and taste of the water. We couldn’t wait until we could turn the filter back on. (also dont skip the flush with a hose step as annoying as it is, the carbon fibers get everywhere, because of the location of our filter we couldnt get it outside to flush so tired to flush it through the closest faucet and that did not work.)
