Designed for media storage, use as a boot drive, or as a replacement for an existing drive, the 500GB CS900 SATA III 2.5″ Internal SSD from PNY Technologies allows users to store and access up to 500GB of data. It is equipped with a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface that is compatible with SATA II 3 Gb/s and fits into your system’s 2.5″ / 7mm drive bay, providing load and access times for files and programs that are faster than those of a traditional spinning hard drive. In terms of speed, this drive offers sequential write speeds of up to 500 MB/s and sequential read speeds of up to 550 MB/s via its Triple-Level Cell (TLC) NAND flash memory. In addition to its enhanced data transfer rates, this drive also offers a life expectancy of 2 million hours MTBF, TRIM support (OS dependent), and S.M.A.R.T support.
With solid-state drive technology you benefit from load and access times for your files and programs that are faster than a conventional 7200 rpm hard drive. As SSDs have no moving parts, they are also more durable than traditional hard drives and are better protected against damage from drops and bumps. Having no moving parts also means that SSDs receive less wear and tear, as there are no read or write heads for the drive media to come into contact with. SSDs also help to deliver improved battery life and cooler operating temperatures. Supported operating systems include Windows, Mac, Linux, and Ubuntu. A 2.5mm spacer is also included, which allows this 7mm SSD to be used in 2.5″ / 9.5mm drive bays. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

The PNY harddrive itself works great, was a good price, shipped quickly, and arrived packaged well. However, part of the reason I purchased this specific product from B&H Photo was specifically because the product description stated that the product was shipped with a licensed copy of Acronis True Image HD 2017 data migration software, which it does not. Unfortunately, B&H Photo is out for an extended Easter vacation, so they have been unable to respond to my requests for resolution. So, if like me, you are swayed with the advertising that the SSHD comes with a licensed copy of Acronis True Image, it does not. Also, can confirm that the product does not come with any mounting hardware like an earlier reviewer commented, however the screws from the SSHD that I removed fit into the new drive properly. The only reason you’d need new screws is if this SSHD is not replacing an existing HD.

I bought this to replace another brand 2Tb SSD that failed after only 4 months of use. The PNY came up easily and quickly and has been perfectly well-behaved for the last week or so. I plugged it in, the BIOS registered it, windows installed beautifully, and everything seems to run pretty snappy. I haven’t gotten to use it a lot but everything seems okay for now.

I am working on a server project and I needed 2 small SSDs to put the OS on. These drives completed OS installation much faster than the 2.5 HDDs that were present before. So far, they’ve been nice and reliable for daily use

My laptop hard drive was acting erratically, so I thought that life span of it was nearing and end. So I purchased this internal PNY 1TB SSD drive and cloned the old drive to it and installed it in the laptop. when I turned the laptop back on it just started right up and worked. What a difference it has made. Boots up in less that 15 seconds now and works great . the laptop now seems to run much faster. A great buy and great recommendation to use this SSD by B&H staff.

As I am typing these words, this is a very low cost SSD; even no-name SSDs have comparable prices. This isn’t going to be Samsung PRO SSD, but it doesn’t cost as much as one. The main disadvantage of a SSD at this price point is that its chance of failing is higher; as always, be prepared to recover should the SSD break down. The other disadvantage is that performance may be lower. In terms of speed, it runs quite quickly running Linux (CentOS 8); at no point did I feel the SSD was too slow. Then again, Linux is quite snappy with any hardware from the last 15 years, including older HDDs. For increasing the speed and capacity of an older system where the expense of a high-end SSD is not warranted, or for having a “how swap” SSD on standby to get running again should one’s main storage fail, this is perfect.

I needed to upgrade a handful of older dual-core laptops but didn’t want to spend much per unit. These drives have been fast and dependable, well worth the price. Wish PNY would provide a software download to assist in cloning their drives though.

This is a great general purpose ssd, it has enough space for most things and it is fast enough so that few would notice. I can’t give it 5 stars only because there are faster M.2 drives but for the very reasonable price it is a perfect drive!
