I was looking at a few different lathes this spring, as usual I did a lot of reading and checking with other experienced wood turners before I made my purchase. I’m glad I waited. After looking for months, Powermatic released this model for those of us who need a serious lathe but don’t have a large shop space. The 2014 is not quite as heavy duty as the larger 3520 but it does share many great features such as a very handy magnetic control box which allows you to place the controls wherever is most convenient to the project size you’re working with. It also has a very smooth speed adjustment allowing you to go from a barely moving 15 rpm to a brisk 1008 rpm on the lowest belt speed. Those speeds double on the middle belt position and up to 3600 on the high setting. You can reverse which is a handy feature for sanding and the motor will stop and reverse direction while in use and return to the speed setting you were using. Once level the machine is smooth as can be, I ran it on high with a dime on it’s side and there was no vibration at all. I just added the 13″ extension to take advantage of the outboard turning capabilities, I look forward to testing it with bigger bowls. All in all this is a very solid machine that I would recommend to anyone who can’t yet afford the price of the larger 3520 or does not have the space for a large production size lathe. The only thing I did differently is I chose to build my own stand to add the capability of adding extra ballast weight underneath. I would love it if Powermatic would eventually offer a cast iron stand for the 2014 for those of us who do not intend to move it regularly. Otherwise so far I have no real negatives. One day I’m sure I will want its bigger cousin when I have the space!

Platters, bowls, pens, bats, segmented turnings, live edge turnings, hardwood, softwood … I haven’t had issues with any of it! Plenty of power! The speed control pendent is a great feature!

Well made, well thought out lath, love the movable control box. If there is any negative comment, it is the stand. It’s a piece of sheet metal junk! lathe shakes like a bowl of Jello, don’t waste your money on it.
