I needed to replace a standard wood child gate that I’ve stepped over the top of for the past 15 years. The wood gate is located at the top of the stairwell to keep the Chihuahua’s out of the basement. I had a friend ask to stay in a basement bedroom for a couple months while their house sold, so I bought this metal gate to eliminate the “step over” requirement. After replacing the wood gate with this Regalo 30″ high metal gate, I’ve asked myself why I waited so long. My stairway opening is wide and requires I use both the long and short extension sections of the Regalo gate. Even with those attached, the gate is extremely sturdy and the tension screws at each end of the gate have not put marks on the wall board or door casing. The gate is just plain fantastic. The only addition I made was to put four 1/2 inch square, clear, self-stick plastic feet spaced along the bottom side of the bottom horizontal rail so the rail would not make marks on the oak flooring when the gate was being used (see photo). The friction from these feet also stiffened up the gate somewhat so that it doesn’t flex. The walk-thru feature is great. Just be sure to place the gate such that “door” portion opens towards the floor and not down the stairs. To open downward would create a safety hazard. Words can’t praise this gate adequately. What a great purchase.
