We need to modify the template by adding a thin spacer on one inner surface of the template. The template locates the hinge routing footprint with one inner edge with a pre-fixed distance from the door surface. My existing door hinge footprint is with a distance different than the template. Luckily my door hinge is with 1/4″ corner radius. Otherwise with the spacer modification, I will not be able to route any 5/8″ corner radius hinge footprint with the template.

This is the best hinge template I have owned. It’s accurate, easy to align and it was easy to use the corner blocks to change the routed corner radius. To make it a 5-star product I would find a way to make the clamping frame more rigid. When in a hurry it was easy to NOT notice that one end of the template bowed higher than the other, thus creating an uneven surface.

The unit has nice features but the plastic housing is hard to keep straight and tweaking on the knob to tighten the unit results in flex that distorts the shape and makes using the unit difficult. It is ok for the occasional use I intend to use it for but certainly not a unit I would consider for a professional ongoing tool.

Was easy to use and made it easy to cut the hinge pockets in the door. Does make it easier if a small plunge type router is used with the template. A regular size router is a bit cumbersome but can be used if care is taken.
