I was so happy to find this contraption at Home Depot. I was very worried about carving out the door latches myself. This was so easy to use. Be careful and practice on something before you use it on the door. The first door we did crack and splinter slightly, but we learned and the rest of the doors were turned out perfect. I would say any negative reviews that come from this are from those who didn’t use it properly.

Great product. Works great.Nice price too.

It works but I cannot give it 5 stars because you still need to use a chisel to have a clean cut.

Product met the need, did a good job but not exceptional. This device is all you need to remove a thin section of the door (where the door latch extends outward) to create space for the metal strike plate (see photo). It has 2 cutting inserts (one with rounded corners and one with more squared corners) that you affix into the green plastic block, you align this on the edge of the door and then strike the block with a hammer to drive the insert into the door’s edge and create a cut-out edge that matches the shape of the metal strike plate. The you flip the device around so that the little black cutting edge (shown on the right of the image above) is stuck into the hole where the door latch will go. The cutting edge is at the proper depth for the metal strike plate. Tapping on the rounded edges of the device drives the cutting edge into the door (up or down) and shaves off a thin slice of the door, leaving a space that is the perfect shape and depth for the metal strike plate. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do. The first time I used it, I had to shift my grip on the device, which moved it slightly, so I had 2 slightly different insert cut-outs, so there is a small space around the metal strike plate. Not a big deal, but it’s imperfect. Mostly due to beginner’s error. Carefully position the device, hold it tight, hit it right, remove the cut-out, be happy. This would be perfect if there was a way to better ensure accuracy for properly placing the cutting inserts on the door edge. Probably not worth taking a whole point off, but that was my only option.

This really helped with lock installation

Works ok for getting the shape of the latch and chiseling. Could use some more R&D for leveling and more precise cuts.

Works as described,I recommend this product to get nice smooth cuts.

Working on solid pine doors, the “outlining” part of the tool worked great. The raised “pin” made it easy to center on the drilled hole in the door and as long as the tool is held tightly to the door the marking/scribe is accurately aligned. The scribed area conformed to the latch plate well. The “chisel” part of the tool is much less effective. It will remove wood from the mortise at the correct depth – but not very well. Be prepared to use a standard wood chisel to clean out the area. I’m not sure high long-lived the tool will be but I believe it will last at least the 8-10 doors that I have to do and it obviously saves a lot of time and gives much better results than other methods.

A lot harder than you think

Needed this to cut the end plates into the door edge. Accurate and easy to use. Still used a chisel to help clean out the hole.

Great tool. I’m always skeptical of do-it-all and all-in-one tools because there is always a compromise baked in somewhere. The Ryobi tool’s compromises are minimal. I replaced every doorknob and handleset in my new house and this tool worked flawlessly. I did use a wood chisel on a few exterior doors where I wanted to convert to a latch plate. I also used the Ryobi tool as a hammer with the chisel. I did not use the screwdriver bits as I prefer my own screwdrivers and my cordless drill, but it is nice that it is there. The one issue I noticed was that one of the screwdriver bits would fall out occasionally when I was hammering. Not a big deal. I would readily purchase this again if I ever lost it.

A simple and ingenious tool.

It’s not bad and not the best, aligning it is ok striker is not that sharp but other than that the striker marking helps me to chisel more accurate.

I had 5 doors to install on frames i just fixed. it did what it supposed to do.

I only used it to score the outline of the latch plate. Worked well and saved lots of time—I had 13 doors.
