I needed a heavy-duty, inexpensive, variable speed grinder and this fit the bill.

The grinder was easy to use and very efficient. I bought it for grinding my concrete floors in preparation for an epoxy coating. It’s easy to handle and I enjoy using it.

Pros: 1) Variable speed is great to have for most any job; I don’t know why more pro-level grinders don’t offer this. Though this grinder was priced quite economically, I’d pay more for a higher quality unit with variable speed. Now that I’ve used it, I wouldn’t want a grinder without it. 2) The pivoting head-to-base mechanism is a very useful feature for positioning the grinder to orient it suitably for the job at hand, and I use that feature a lot. 3) Also I really like the 3-place selections of handle positions: left, right, and center. I use them all. 4) Size and weight is nice and manageable, and 5) power is more than adequate for a 7 inch unit. 6) This grinder can be used for multiple applications: grinding, polishing, lighter touch-up jobs, heavy grinding jobs, etc. due to its variable speed control and adjustability. It’s really good to have. 7) It’s priced affordably. I don’t expect it to last as long as a more expensive Hitachi or Makita, but neither of those offer variable speed. Cons: 1) While I totally understand the whole soft-start motor concept for safety reasons (soft-start is a safety feature applied to hand-operated power tools which starts and speeds up the motor gradually yet swiftly over a brief time interval, instead of starting the motor abruptly and making the tool jerk or jump in your hands), Ryobi has done a poor design job on the soft-start controller for this grinder. There’s an annoying and lengthy delay of a second or so after pulling the trigger before anything happens. And after that one second delay, the motor then begins its soft-start cycle time. It takes around a full couple seconds or more for the motor to start and then reach full working speed. Because of this, the operator doesn’t have predictable control over the tool. You have to learn to anticipate this start/run delay as well as the spool-up time, and then change your work technique and habits to accommodate the stupid thing. It’s entirely annoying and disruptive. 2) The lime-ish chartreuse light color of Ryobi’s tools has no place in a job shop where filthy grinding dust is being constantly generated. This looked completely filthy grimey within the first 15 minutes of use. Why can’t they make it in darker blue (like Ryobi used to) or gray or something? – anything but that light lime green that makes it look like a kid’s pool toy. Ryobi’s choice of color cheapens the look of the an otherwise nice tool.

Heavy for a car buffer. Arm fatigue after 5 minutes of continuous work.

The Ryobi sander more than met my expectations. The speed control and trigger switch are especially desirable when trying to control a 7 inch sander.
