Has a very heavy duty feel and performance, especially for a battery powered tool. Its performance equals a large wired tool I have used in the past. Note that this is “tool only”, it does require a battery and I recommend using one of the larger Ryobi One+ batteries for longest use. The chuck is a SDS-plus, which is quite common, and you must use compatible bits. Bits are easy to load and lock into place (use a bit of oil to make it super easy). Extra features are a plus, depth gauge – which is super easy to use, and LED light onboard comes on automatically. It also comes with a handle, which can be removed if desired, but I strongly recommend using especially when set for any of the hammer functions. The unit can also be used as a standard, variable speed reversible drill with SDS+ bits, or you can get an optional adapter (not included) so you can use standard bits for routine drilling functions. Performance is outstanding, really is surprising for a battery unit, I imagine the brushless motor has a lot do with that as they generally produce much more power than the old brush motors.

Rotary hammer drills are expensive. Look at other brands, you will typically spend more than $300 to get a brushless version, not including the batteries of course. Ryobi offers its brushless rotary hammer drill at a very reasonable price. Let’s talk about the build quality. The thing is wrapped with sturdy plastic and rubber. But they don’t feel thin. On the contrary, they feel very solid and should last under regular usages for DIYers. I would guess pro users would rethink about that as they would use rotary hammer drill in very harsh job sites. Talking about the weight, it is not on the heavy side as you would find among other brands (again, I think this is because the outer case is mostly plastic). What I don’t like about is that the hand could be made better. It is made of hard plastic instead of rubber. A rubber handle can help absorbing vibration. I have not got a chance to drill, but it will be used on a small project where I will use it to remove some cracked concrete block and put in a new one. I recommend this project for home DIYers especially if they have already bought into the Ryobi system.

This 18volt Rotary Hammer has a lot of power. I’ve used the corded Rotary Hammers (small & large) in the past and wondered if this tool had what it took. 1st impressions is I won’t have to worry about the power of this cordless..I’m building a small garage and wanted this tool to set my wedge anchors. The 1in size gives me the capacity to use with bigger projects in the future. The torque on this tool is similar to the corded tools with the same capacity. The 18v system allows me to use my existing batteries in this tool. I tried the tool in all three capacities (chisel, Rotary Hammer, Drill) and the selector moved easily between the settings with a twist of the knob. I’m impressed with the compact build of this hammer. I’ve used others that were long and it made the drill bit want to fall forward. This one has great balance and weight. It rests easy on the hand and forearm when holding it straight. The added light helps in those dark corners of the building.

I thought my corded hammer drill, was okay, but this Ryobi is so much better. The heavy weight works for a hammer drill (about 5 lbs), and between that and a well designed grip system makes it work harder with less vibration to stay on spot. Pretty bright LED light focuses on drill area and an adjustable depth rod works without getting in the way. Very well designed tool.

Straight out of the box, you can tell that this Rotary Hammer Drill is Hefty and probably has some power. If this is your first Roto-Hammer or your not familiar with using one, the you should probably do a brief glance over the instructions and a quick inspection to make sure all is there that is suppose to be there.Use any of the 18 Volt Ryobi batteries that you already have and add a bit or two. I used a 1/4″ x 6″ and a 1/2″ x 12″ to set some anchors. I can honestly say that I have used electric hammer drills that didn’t drill any faster and some not as fast as this one did. Granted, new drill and new bits, so only time will tell how well this holds up and how long or how many holes you might get out of 1 battery charge. If you have dozens of holes to drill in a short time, it would pay to have several batteries on charged and on standby.Very satisfied with it’s performance for my needs and would recommend to anyone needing to drill or chisel some concrete.

The RYOBI 18V ONE+, Brushless, 1 in. SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer/Drill is a powerful tool. The brushless motor provides up to 2.1 Joules impact energy. On my first project, placing an anchor into a large granite boulder to connect an angled tensioning cable to plum my gate post the drill bit just walked through the boulder like a knife through butter (see pictures). While drilling the hole I didn’t feel any vibration due to the anti-vibration handle. The rotary hammer comes with a handy depth gauge stop so it is possible to drill to the proper depth on every hole (see pictures). A LED light is provided on the front of the hammer/drill for low light situations. The rotary hammer/drill has 3 modes, drilling, hammer drilling and plain hammer (no rotation) made for a chisel bit. The chuck on the drill requires that the drill bits have a “SDS Plus” shank. It is possible to purchase a ½ inch, 3 jaw, keyless adapter chuck with an SDS-Plus shank. The hammer/drill is also variable speed. The hammer/drill is “tool only” but I already have a charger and batteries from my other Ryobi tools. A battery and charger can be purchased separately at Home Depot. The Ryobi Hammer/Drill comes with a 3-year manufactures warranty. This tool fills a void for me. I now have a large powerful cordless drill I can use outdoors or indoors and I can be totally power cord free. I like it !

With this acquisition I am now into my third Ryobi One+ tool. I guess I have joined their eco system. As this is a “Tool Only” rotary hammer drill, meaning you get the tool only without battery or battery charger you need to have at least one other Ryobi One+ with battery and charger. My Ryobi mower came with two batteries which of course fit this tool. Opening the box reveals the SDS rotary hammer, an auxiliary handle and the owner’s manual. From chuck to rear handle is just over 12″, about 7″ tall and 3″ at it widest. The aux handle is already attached for left hand use, but can easily be switched to the right side. Attached to this aux handle is the metal depth stop rod which can quickly be adjusted or removed with the one press release lever. This SDS Plus features a forward, reserve and lock switch for the variable speed trigger. Activating the trigger will power a bright LED lamp that will cycle off 10 seconds after trigger release. Electric brakes provide a smooth but not instant stop. A tether can be attached to the back heel of the handle. Any Ryobi 18 volt One+ battery will attach and lock below the handle. The handle has a wrap around modeled grip which mitigates some vibration. Additional gripping material partially encases the brushless motor housing. I noticed the top of the handle is not directly attached to the gear housing. It can flex a bit reducing the amount of vibrations into the handle. The four position mode control requires unlocking before you can switch to a different mode. Confirmation of the new mode is through audio click and a solid feeling stop. With the dial in the horizontal position it can be hard to tell which mode it is in as it seems to point to both hammer and drill. This can easy be fixed by applying a dab of paint to the correct pointer. The four modes include drilling, hammer drilling, chisel, and hammer. Due to the 1″ SDS-Plus chuck you will need to buy SDS-Plus bits. With SDS-Plus bits you insert them into the chuck and they lock in. To release you pull back on the chuck. If you want to use non-SDS-Plus drilll bits, you’ll need to buy a chuck adapter.I find that even without a battery and the motor below the gearing the unit is heavy with most of the weight in front. Adding a 4 Ah battery helps with the weight distribution but it still front heavy. Using the aux handle will help with balancing it out as the motor tends to stabilize lateral movements. Things I really like about this unit include lack of strong vibration, due in part to dampening material and motor placement. The simple to use locking rotary mode switch, along with the built in depth control rod and the switchable aux handle. The only two things I did not like was lack of visual marking on the rotary mode switch and the lack of a non SDS chuck adapter.

Love my Ryobi Hammer Drill, very easy to use and handle. I use a 4,0AH battery in it and it lasts quite awhile. Have been using it to drill into stones so I can split the rocks to move them. The hammer Drill usesSDS hammer drill bits that lock in place. They do have an accessory chuck that allows you to use any drill bit. I use the 5 pack SDS drill bits from 1/2″ to 3/16″ they work very well for me.
