Measuring at only 6.4 in. in length, this tool is 30% more compact and 20% lighter weight than the brushed model, giving you better access to tight workspaces and overhead applications. It’s also equipped with a brushless motor that delivers up to 400 in./lbs. of torque for maximum power when drilling and driving through tough materials. Other special features include a two-speed gearbox (0-450 and 0-1,700 RPM) and a 24-position clutch for maximum control while drilling and driving. The 1/2 in. single sleeve ratcheting chuck is custom designed with a unique knurling pattern to provide a durable grip for quick bit changes. The drill is fine, but I only rated it four stars because Ryobi should include a better battery pack with it. I am used to the run time and strength of 3 or 4 amp/he batteries. The ones that came with the drill are only 1 1/2 amp/he and as a result, they leave something to be desired.

I purchased this as a lighter alternative to my more powerful Makita hammer drill. While I need the Makita’s torque at times, there are many times that I do not needs it’s weight. This Ryobi weighs about half as much (with a smaller battery), and still has sufficient torque for all the drilling needs that I would expect of a compact drill. I have used drill bits up to half an inch without bogging. The electronic speed control works very well and provides powerful torque even at extremely low RPM. The weight of the drill and it’s balance are excellent. One small detail I appreciate is that the chrome ring on the chuck is free to spin separate from the chuck. If you have ever drilled or driven a screw in a tight spot, you know how the end of the chuck can rub against your material and mar the chuck. The free spinning chrome end helps to eliminate many of those situations. And finally, this would be a great 18V class drill for women, kids, or anyone that cannot, or does not want, to heft a 6 pound drill. Time will tell how well it wears, but for any one using it in a home/light commercial setting, I expect it will perform for a long time. I’m very happy with it.
