My husband was excited to receive this as birthday gift. He needed to replace a broken gas trimmer and really likes the convenience of a battery operated version. He intends to continue to replace gas run tools with battery-operated Ryobi versions going forward so the batteries can be interchangeable.

I bought this tool toward the end of the season. I have only used the serrated blade weed cutter. It works great. We have a hidden section of the yard that had gotten out of control with big gnarly weeds. The Ryobi tool cut them down with ease. I also used the edge attachment and was happy with it. This is our second Ryobi weed whacker. I prefer this newer one because the older one was difficult for me to convert between weed cutter and edger. We really like the big battery that holds a charge for a long time. Our only complaint is that the instructions for assembly are nearly useless. My husband and son were able to assemble it for me. A person without good mechanical skills would likely have trouble making it work.

My gas trimmer is AWOL. My sister bought the same unit, and, based on her experience, and the great sale price, I was sold. It was easy to assemble. With the 40 volt lithium battery it has plenty of power for residential use. It lasted for a very long time. Coming with spare string was a pleasant bonus. The only negative mark it gets is for omitting a shoulder strap. I liked it so much I bought the matching leaf blower.

The Ryobi 40-Volt trimmer is a solid piece of equipment for yardwork. It is heavy duty, lasts about 40 minutes with non-stop use and has the power of a gas engine, without the mess of oil or gas! Has power to cut through thick weeds and I do use it for edging as well – does its job and then some. Downfalls of this equipment is that it is bloody heavy on the battery end! There is no easy way of balancing the trimmer, and after a while it does start to strain arms and backs if you are not careful. The charger included does its job well enough, takes about 3 hours to charge from fully drained to full again. Changing the string is easy and includes the tool for faster wrapping. I would get this again as I don’t have to haul around extension cords or gas anywhere and the battery is interchangeable with the rest of the the 40-Volt line by Ryobi.
