This morning I took my new tool outside for a brief test of its Shrubbery Trimmer cutting ability. First some shoot tips on a little leaf holly bush were trimmed off. The tips were very thin and nipped off easily. Next I used it to shear some thin stalk ornamental grass. I had to push hard against the stalks (1/8″ thick) to get the tool to cut. I then tried some slightly wider blade succulent grasses and again had to push hard against the grasses to shear them. The resulting cuts were more of a tearing effect than a shearing effect – due to the cutting edges being dull. I have concerns about safety of a tool that lacks ability to efficiently cut simple foliage – concerned forcing the tool may result in injury.I have to give a low grade for the tool’s shearing capability. Since I haven’t used the tool for more than a few minutes I can’t vouch for its overall durability and its battery life. So didn’t take any points away for that. May revisit this review and adjust at another time. In the mean time I plan to disassemble the Shrubbery Trimmer and sharpen the many cutting edges. I really want to like this tool, as it has all the features that I want for cutting back perennial flowering plants and ornamental grasses. But as it is designed and sold, the tool really won’t reduce my effort compared to using manual cutting tools.
