The 500GB X5 Portable SSD from Samsung is built with a 500GB NVMe SSD and a Thunderbolt 3 interface. Thanks to the combination of both technologies, this portable drive can deliver read and write speeds of up to 2800 MB/s and 2100 respectively. In addition to fast speeds, SSDs are built without any moving parts, making them more durable than their hard drive counterparts. For additional protection, it’s built with magnesium alloy to survive drops from up to 6′ high, as well as Dynamic Thermal Guard technology and a heatsink to keep things cool and prevent throttling. Physical security aside, the X5 also supports password protection via AES 256-bit encryption to keep your data safe. Please note that software updates for the X5 are only supported on Windows PCs.

yesterday, i plugged in my drive, and it appeared on my desktop. i pulled up the samsungportablessd app, and it said, “no samsung portablessd is connected.” nothing loads other than the x5_setup read-only partition. it also seems to get very hot. now i’m stuck on hold with tech support.

This is my fourth Samsung X5 Portable SSD. I have had no issues with any of the previous SSDs I own. They do the job! And, they are packaged in a way that makes them easy to bring along when I travel. I am extremely careful with my backup devices, so I put the SSD back into the box, and it fits into my camera bag. At this point, I would not consider anything different.

Just wishing it’s in a metal shell instead of a plastic one.

I have now bought 2 of these drives. My son uses one to back up large video and graphics files. I needed a combination of flexible storage options, high transfer speed, and low physical profile without overheating to take advantage of the now excellent iOS File app and its compatibility with external drives. I did a lot of research then went with the Samsung X5… twice. It’s everything the specs claim and plus easy to transport – not always the case! B&H was amazing. I had my X5 in Chicago (from the East Coast) the day after I ordered and at no shipping charge.

When I first heard of this drive I was really excited reading the speeds of the transfers. I do a lot of video work so Im always transferring movies back and forth to my PC or phone. I was very impressed by the transfer speeds. The drive itself wasnt too bulky. I liked the astetic of it. But I quickly found out that a regular C port cable will not transfer any files. When I plugged it in, it never showed up in windows. It only showed up when I used a thunderbolt c cable

Samsung 1TB X5 Portable SSD works seamlessly with my Macbook Pro Max in 4K Video and high fidelity audio production. This mesh in performance is mainly due to SSD thunderbolt interface.
