Built using their V-NAND 3-bit MLC NAND flash technology and Pablo controller, the 1TB 980 PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 Internal SSD from Samsung offers an M.2 2280 form factor and a PCIe 3.0 x4 / NVMe 1.4 interface to deliver sequential read speeds of up to 3500 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 3000 MB/s. Users will also have access to encryption via AES 256-bit, TCG/Opal 2.0, and MS eDrive, while a TBW (Total Bytes Written) rating of 600TB helps ensure a long operational life. This SSD also features a smart thermal solution to effectively manage heat, as well as a nickel coating and a heat spreader. Additionally, thanks to Full Power Mode, which is enabled through Samsung’s Magician software, the 980 can run with no latency, so you can easily switch between interfacing with large, intensive work files or graphics-heavy games.

No problem installing and setting up on my Windows 11 desktop. I upgraded from SSDs. For my general use and photo editing (primarily Lightroom), there was no appreciable improvement in performance. Maybe gamers would see more of an improvement? But, it works well.

This is a great add on to any system. Fast and compact. Good bye SATA.

Fast and reliable not too expensive Samsung NVME ssd

On a whim, I am going slightly above the DS1821+ required M.2 cache. At this point, these work AMAZING and provide excellent performance boosting for all the files I’m transferring over. Quick, well packaged, safe to install and … a great addition to the NAS that will further boost performance.

B&H shipped this in a padded envelope which was crushed on one end. Samsung’s packaging prevented damage to the product. Very easy installation & setup using windows computer management to format. Great for storage of edited photos & videos. Runs a little warmer than my 970 pro & 970 EVO drives but only by about (2 C). Write speed is faster but read speed is about the same as the 970’s.

this was installed on the family computer and while the previous drive was a typical “sata ssd” i never noticed how slow it was. after learning about different storage types, i now realize why nvme is so much faster. and it is noticeable! the load times for the initial startup is almost instant now. i don’t even see the windows loading screen. pictures are clicked and opened almost immediately. i didn’t know that a storage device could make such a difference, but my family has informed me that my pc is more than capable and switching to this drive was the breath of life it needed to be brought back into the 21st century. overall super happy with the drive.

I have used the Samsung 970 EVO 1 TB and some older versions as well. According to review sites, this is a newer but not a better version of the Samsung cheaper consumer line SSD. There are no DRAMs anymore. If you consider buying this, you should research it first to understand your usage whether the lack of DRAMs will impact what you do. For me, Windows 10 booted up in less than 17 seconds including post, that’s pretty good for a $120 1TB drive. I am sure if you are doing a tons of I/O for your PC, then you should consider the $180 1TB 980 EVO PRO instead. But for me, this is great speed and great price.

Tested this baby against 2 other different leading competitors NVMe SSD drives as a secondary multimedia drive(standard formatting options, Default allocation size). Ran three real world tests on all three drives. I have decided to snatch these up to replace all three of my M.2 drives with these. My decision comes from editing video and building PC’s for Multimedia professionals(graphics, video, webmasters, coders) for the past 15 years or so. Installation Easy, breezy. I have a huge top end laptop meant for video editing on the go. If any hardware has extra heatsinks, thicker chips, etc, it will not fit. 980 PRO slipped in without issue or modification to the housing of the drives. Initialized the drive, downloaded the software, updated firmware in under two minutes. This product is good for your little to big workstation setups and is not a IT nightmare. I would note that for bigger workstations, you will probably need more storage than 500GB since typical high-end motherboards support 3 M.2 drives with 2 lanes of bandwidth. 4K video export In older HDD’s and SSD’s(non M.2), I found the temperature to rise quite a bit when using either to export from or to. With M.2 drives It got even less. The 980 PRO never broke a sweat. Granted, I am pumping out master files at an average speed of 56mbps which is a low level hum in the performance aspect of the drive, but it stayed the same temp. This should mean a longer lasting drive with less dead spots over time. File Transfer I just threw a mix of files together(100GB total, all different sizes) and transferred to see. Topped out at 1.8GBps with no dips. Other drives topped out at 1.6 and wavered between 1.2 to 1.6GBps. The heat rose less with the 980 PRO and plateaued at a lower temp than the others. Read write functions to itself(duplicated the files on the 980 PRO) resulted in a dip to 1.6GBps and still outperformed it’s peers. Final Opinion Only having a 500GB storage meant I could not test this drive as an OS drive. I do surmise that for a graphic design professional or a gamer, this would be the perfect OS drive as its read write capability is higher and runs at a lower temp. Even transferring files felt snappier(request to response time). Like I already stated, this drive is going to replace my others.

I upgraded from a 960 version 500 GB to this 980 Terabyte since I was running out of room. The 960 has been flawless for over 5 years. The SSD Magician utility software for the drives is a good tool to monitor and maintain the firmware updates.

This SSD was top of the line when I bought it and It improved my storage and my speed. SSDs are essential to computing nowadays. I am very happy with this product and am thinking of getting another one now that my motherboard has been upgraded

If you want speed and some extra room for cash, this SSD is great. I am using it to run windows10, 3D Maya, Arnold, and Zbrush for work. I am happy and I recommend M.2.

This is Samsung’s entry-level SSD and performance is adequate for the price, especially if bought on sale. If your intended application is very performance sensitive, look at the 980 Pro. Reputable testers such as Anandtech have pages and pages of graphs to help you compare the two and many other models.

This is a DRAM-less SSD. While the performance is not as good as DRAM SSD like 970 EVO Plus, it is very fast and hard to tell the difference in real life. With its low cost, I would highly recommend it.

dont need pcie 4.0. don’t need 7000mb/s speeds. just decent enough to make a huge difference if you’re gaming and using premiere pro on and off. just right for the price.

I was looking for a 2tb for an extra slot in pc, although this ssd is just 1tb, it is an excellent option for the price range

I decided it was time to try Samsung for my next main drive. It does rum a bit warmer, but not to a point of danger. Fast and also less expensive than in previous versions. Formatting and running Windows 11 is not a problem. Recommended.
