Built using their V-NAND 3-bit MLC NAND flash technology and Pablo controller, the 1TB 980 PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 Internal SSD from Samsung offers an M.2 2280 form factor and a PCIe 3.0 x4 / NVMe 1.4 interface to deliver sequential read speeds of up to 3500 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 3000 MB/s. Users will also have access to encryption via AES 256-bit, TCG/Opal 2.0, and MS eDrive, while a TBW (Total Bytes Written) rating of 600TB helps ensure a long operational life. This SSD also features a smart thermal solution to effectively manage heat, as well as a nickel coating and a heat spreader. Additionally, thanks to Full Power Mode, which is enabled through Samsung’s Magician software, the 980 can run with no latency, so you can easily switch between interfacing with large, intensive work files or graphics-heavy games.

I’ve been looking to upgrade my current gaming PC and was very pleased to find out that it had a second available slot for this 500Gb SSD. I figured it will be perfect way to a boost for gaming or a seamless workflow for heavy graphics, the 980 is a smart choice for outstanding SSD performance – and it’s all backed by an NVMe interface and PCIe 3.0 technology. The install was very easy, as they say “plug and play”. You can use the optional Samsung Magician software with it which is pretty neat and useful as well. The drive itself states read speeds up to 3500Mb/s however after doing some testing I was not able to replicate that kind of speed, however all the applications loaded up quickly and after doing some transfers back and forth, it worked amazingly fast. If you still use a spinning drive I would absolutely recommend replacing it with this SSD drive (or even better with a Pro version of it), you will see your OS boot up in seconds, read and write speeds will be quick which will improve your work flow. Samsung is a reliable brand for SSD media and this NVMe M2 is an awesome alternative to any other competition in this area. I received this product at a discounted price for my honest opinion.

The Samsung SSD 980 is a very fast and reliable drive. I currently use a 2.5 inch wide Samsung SSD from a few years ago and the difference in speed and responsiveness is absolutely noticed. I cloned over my main OS and have it running on this drive and opening programs is as fast as a blink of an eye. Windows loads in 13 seconds on cold boot up which is amazing considering my old SSD was around 40 seconds. Loading Photoshop is about 2 seconds. As I work with large photos of videos, I no longer have lag scrubbing though the files. What I really like about Samsung is that they control the entire supply chain when building their SSD drives including their controllers which I feel helps optimize the entire SSD and also aids in Samsung’s great reliability record. 3500mb/s are speeds that only a few years ago where not mass market. The Samsung SSD is air cooled and has a special nickel coating to help keep things cool as the shear speed of drive is keeping performance at top priority without worry of overheating. I feel absolutely amazed at all the time in engineering Samsung has put into making this drive perform the way is does. This kind of performance really helps especially in video editing and opening large file sizes with ease. I can finally scrub through 4k video on my computer smoothly. Great job Samsung.

So I’ve been looking for an NVMe drive for a while now. I was late to hop on the typical 3.5″ SATA SSD train back in 2010ish, and likewise have been out of the loop on the newest technology which is NVMe drives running on PCIe lanes. For those that aren’t too tech savvy, a typical 3.5″ SATA SSD (the square drives that hook up with a data and power cable) has a speed of 600 MB/s. An M2 NVMe drive (like the Samsung 980) has a capable speed of 3500 MB/s. Simply put, NVMe is the next generation of data storage. Gone are the days of bulky hard drives, and 3.5″ SATA SSD’s are on their way out too. With all that being said, most places online will tell you that the difference in upgrading from a 3.5″ SATA SSD to an M.2 NVMe drive will be minimal. I assure you that is NOT the case here. The Samsung 980 uses PCIe Gen 3 technology. Coupled with the fact that the SLC cache is now entirely dynamic vs it’s predecessors means this drive is not like others. What this means in Laymans terms is this: Do you ever wonder why when you copy a large file from one drive to another it always starts off fast and then slows down? The cache is a major reasoning for that. Once a drive uses up all it’s “cache” (temp) storage, then it has to write directly to the location where the file is going, which is A LOT slower. With Samsungs new dynamic cache on the 980, that temp storage, “cache”, can be scaled. Up to a degree that is. You will still hit peak performance a degradation at some point, but that will be at a much later point. For the average user though, you will probably never hit this point on this memory drive. With that being said, I don’t like to do too many speed tests on my drives as that puts wear on them unnecessarily. So the only numbers I have are from my everyday tasks. Coming from a 3.5″ SATA SSD to this Samsung 980, my Windows boot time went from 7.6 to 5.3 seconds. That’s about a 30% increase! Game load times decreased by an average of 20%. I did not do any hard heavy file copying, but my daily backup (running in the background) has decreased in time by 35% (mainly I think due to the dynamic SLC cache). If the rest of my speeds on memory are even half as improved, this drive definitely makes a worthwhile upgrade for any computer. Overall, Samsung once again is smashing the competition in terms of all around package. The best in class 5 year warranty along with the newest technology will make sure this drive will outlast most other components of your PC. Note: Please make sure that your computer/motherboard supports this drive form factor (M.2) and supports the technology of this drive (NVMe). There are SATA M.2 drives. Some motherboards that have an M.2 drive “may” require a BIOS update to support NVMe drives running in PCIe mode. My motherboard of about 4 years old did. Newer boards shouldn’t and be ready to go out the box. Secondly if you can, buy a 1TB drive. Bigger drives will allow for a larger dynamic cache range which will greatly help in keeping speeds fast.

I bought this to use as an external HD for my Mac Pro 2019 and placed it in a Sabrent tool-less aluminum enclosure. Transferred 400 GB of photos over to it in a very short time. Got mildly warm during transfer, pretty normal. No issue. I trust Samsung memory to be reliable, I’ve never had a problem with any of their solid State drives and I have many.
