I’ve gone thru several of the smaller portable style external hard drives, and their lives seems to be as short as a squirrel in traffic. Bought this drive and couldn’t be happier. This is my second one and will be sticking with the G-drives in the future.

I purchased this to use as an external hard drive for video editing. While it is a good, large storage device, it is not good as an external video editing solution. The hard drive is slow to wake up, and even slower when used with Final Cut Pro X. I would recommend purchasing smaller storage SSD drives for video editing. Wish I could return it, but it’s past the return window at B&H.

Doesn’t even mount. I haven’t had a need for it, and had it sitting, in a dry, cool place for about a year. Suddenly I need to backup content, and it totally fails to mount on the same computer it was used for when I bought it. Back then, it took several minutes to mount. That was ridiculously unacceptable then. Now, I plug it in, even use different cords, check the finder settings… etc… I do every single thing that WD tells me to do, and there is NO LIFE in it. It has never been dropped, or bumped, etc. but I do feel like taking a Hammer to it now… 200$ and a LOT of time down the drain..!! Interestingly, my 8 year old G-Drive works like a champ.. and use it exclusively for all my processing for all my weddings and videos.. I must have ran at least 500 projects on that old drive, but it works solidly, yet the brand new one is total garbage. I guess I’ll have to buy a new one and play the Russian Roulette game with these expensive pieces of junk..!!

This brand has been very reliable. I would only recommend this drive for backup use. Definitely go with an SSD if you’re using this for a main drive.

The annoying thing about this hard drive is that it goes to sleep, and when you need to download data there is a delay of 5-10 seconds before it wakes up and starts accepting the download. Once started it’s fine–relatively fast. But that delay, which happens more often than not, is disappointing.

I’ve had these drives almost exclusively since 2008. Haven’t lost one yet and they all still work, notwithstanding changing connection types. I use my older ones for offsite backup. Recent color change is pleasing to the eye. Made by Sandisk, a smoking company so far.
