I bought this to share scanned photos between computers. I had to buy a new computer this year and, of course, it’s Windows 10. Then a couple of months ago, I was given an older film and slide scanner. The software wouldn’t load on the Windows 10 computer. Rather than spend money on new software, I unpacked my Windows 7 laptop and set up a small workstation with the scanner. The scanned files are very large and rather than try to email them between computers or try to transfer over Wi-Fi, I just copy them to the flash drive and walk them over to the new computer. I can use the USB Type A connection on my laptop (which is only USB 2.0) and the USB Type C connection on my new desktop.

Convenient and fast! And small – so small that I worry I might misplace it and never see it again. (LOL) For people who are confused, the device is the height and width of a USB-A port, so it just plugs in, the whole thing. I’m very happy I purchased this, and may buy a few more.

I expected the speeds I got and found them more than adequate for nearly any general purpose use. I tested its speed as soon as I received it with the AJA System Test and for a 1 GB file, it got a 65 MB/sec write speed and 147 MB/sec read speed. You can get some similar read speeds with cheaper drives, but this drive’s write speed is better than most and you’d need something significantly more expensive to write data faster. I got essentially the same speeds using either of the drive’s ports, as I expected. Unless you are constantly writing huge data chunks like massive video files, this drive should serve you well, and I have had good reliability from Sandisk. The swing clip over the USB-C port is an added bonus. It is very small and easily lost though; if I can find one fault, I wish they included a short cord or lanyard to not lose it – but this is quite minor. It can heat up with prolonged use, but this is also normal.

Wish Sandisk packaged the Ultra-Drive with a pouch or a small chain to keep it from getting lost. It is solidly built but is so tiny that it can easily slip noticed.
