Designed for saving and editing high-resolution photos and videos, the 500GB Extreme Portable USB 3.1 Type-C External SSD from SanDisk provides users with up to 500GB of storage for their creative content work, as well as a 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Type-C interface, which is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 and delivers read speeds of up to 550 MB/s. Additionally, this SSD is IP-55 rated and features resistance against water, dust, and shock. It can withstand a water flow of up to 30 kPA for 3 minutes, 1500 g of shock, and 5 gRMS of vibration @ 10-2000 Hz. It can also withstand drops of up to 6.5′ on a concrete floor and temperature extremes, with operating temperatures ranging from 32 to 113°F and storage temperatures ranging from -4 to 158°F.
Compact and pocket-sized, SanDisk has preformatted this SSD as exFAT, meaning it is ready for immediate plug-and-play use with both Windows 10, 8.1 and 7, plus macOS High Sierra, Sierra, and El Capitan without the need for any special drivers or reformatting. Thanks to SanDisk SecureAccess 128-bit AES encryption, private files can be password-protected. Included is a USB Type-C to Type-C cable and a USB Type-C to Type-A adapter. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

Got my first one of these towards the end of last year and have had zero complaints. Use it with my MacBook Pro 2018. This drive has become my ‘go to’ drive for portable 2K video editing. It has a read speed of over 400mb/ps in usb2 configuration on my MacBook Pro. It is an expensive option but when compared to the performance of LaCie rugged drives it’s a no brainer.

Perfect for photo archives. Compact size. Fast read. Okay transfer speed – not what I would call lightening but that’s probably because I’m transferring huge folders with 25,000 images at a time. I use multiple external drives to archive years worth of photo shoots, and this 2TB drive was worth the price.

You definitely pay more for a solid-state-drive, but the speed is worth it if you can afford it. I utilize an SSD to hold and transfer large video files. I edited quite a few videos on my computer directly from this drive. It’s very small in the form factor. The one thing I would change is that the USB cable had an adapter on it to use on your standard USB 2.0/3.0 connection on your Mac. This can come off when you unplug your SSD from your computer and when you get to the next place you find that you just have the USB cable to the micro or mini USB since you are missing the connector. Just a minor thing.

I am blown away by this tiny, rugged and super fast drive! The build quality is better than any other small drive I looked into. The size is amazingly small. And as for speed, it’s like lightning! Ran some benchmark test with it using the USB-C connection on my HP laptop that is running an 8th generation i7 processor. I’m getting 560 MB/s read, and 502MB/s write! All of this for $99 can’t be beat!

I bought this drive to backup my MacBook Pro. When I travel, I download my photos for the day each night and then backup the computer. This drive was attractive to me because of its speed and durability. The drive it replaced was made for rough use but being a disc could not withstand the physical abuse that an SSD could. There are faster SSD’s but for backup I find this one more than fast enough. If you were using it for video editing it might be worth the additional cost for a faster SSD. Because of the small size the drive easily stores in my computer bag. I am totally satisfied with the performance of this SSD.

Impressed with the size. Performance is very good – not as fast as my SanDisk Extreme 900 1.92TB drive since this one is not in a RAID config but simply single drive. Still is fast enough for editing photos and GoPro/drone video from the drive without copying to MacBookPro and prefer the size of this one for my regular travel kit. With a lot of digging finally found a perfect fitting case to complement it – the Hermitshell model#B06ZZFPCX5. This fits the drive perfectly along with a USB-C cable (in my case the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 cable).
