Designed for saving and editing high-resolution photos and videos, the 500GB Extreme Portable USB 3.1 Type-C External SSD from SanDisk provides users with up to 500GB of storage for their creative content work, as well as a 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Type-C interface, which is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 and delivers read speeds of up to 550 MB/s. Additionally, this SSD is IP-55 rated and features resistance against water, dust, and shock. It can withstand a water flow of up to 30 kPA for 3 minutes, 1500 g of shock, and 5 gRMS of vibration @ 10-2000 Hz. It can also withstand drops of up to 6.5′ on a concrete floor and temperature extremes, with operating temperatures ranging from 32 to 113°F and storage temperatures ranging from -4 to 158°F.
Compact and pocket-sized, SanDisk has preformatted this SSD as exFAT, meaning it is ready for immediate plug-and-play use with both Windows 10, 8.1 and 7, plus macOS High Sierra, Sierra, and El Capitan without the need for any special drivers or reformatting. Thanks to SanDisk SecureAccess 128-bit AES encryption, private files can be password-protected. Included is a USB Type-C to Type-C cable and a USB Type-C to Type-A adapter. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

Granted I’m not sure how much traveling anyone will be doing in the near future, but this is ideal for it. Water, shock, and fall resistant. I purchased a 1 TB when first released, and ended up unknowingly donating to my family. Replacing that loss with a 2 TB upgrade was a no brainer. I keep a bootable backup of my entire Macbook as well as pics/videos with me when on the road. Takes up absolutely no space and gives complete peace of mind.

I like the housing and packaging. The cable is a bit short and gets in the way of using it with some devices. USB-C to USB-C data cables are a bit hard to find. There are plenty of charging cables, but most of them don’t pass data. Otherwise a great product. My Samsung TV reads the drive and plays jpegs and mp4s.

I LOVE this drive! As a longtime video editor who’s recently transitioned from working on an iMac with a bunch of massive multi-terabyte drives attached to a less location specific MacBook Pro laptop, I couldn’t function without this drive. It’s super fast, very solid and dependable. It’s also great for DIT work on set, especially if you’re juggling multiple cameras. I never write reviews, but I had to for this game changing device. Get this drive, you won’t be disappointed!

It worked great for about 3 weeks. I ran Arch on it to have a portable & bootable SSD. I was looking at the screen when the SSD stopped working; it crashed suddenly and without reason, and has never recovered. I believe the actual USB-C interface connection has failed, I’ve tried several methods to get Windows, Linux, & Mac to even recognize this SSD, but no dice. B&H won’t respond to my emails to their customer service account, so 1 star for B&H on this too. Disappointment all around.
