Designed for saving and editing high-resolution photos and videos, the 500GB Extreme Portable USB 3.1 Type-C External SSD from SanDisk provides users with up to 500GB of storage for their creative content work, as well as a 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Type-C interface, which is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 and delivers read speeds of up to 550 MB/s. Additionally, this SSD is IP-55 rated and features resistance against water, dust, and shock. It can withstand a water flow of up to 30 kPA for 3 minutes, 1500 g of shock, and 5 gRMS of vibration @ 10-2000 Hz. It can also withstand drops of up to 6.5′ on a concrete floor and temperature extremes, with operating temperatures ranging from 32 to 113°F and storage temperatures ranging from -4 to 158°F.
Compact and pocket-sized, SanDisk has preformatted this SSD as exFAT, meaning it is ready for immediate plug-and-play use with both Windows 10, 8.1 and 7, plus macOS High Sierra, Sierra, and El Capitan without the need for any special drivers or reformatting. Thanks to SanDisk SecureAccess 128-bit AES encryption, private files can be password-protected. Included is a USB Type-C to Type-C cable and a USB Type-C to Type-A adapter. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

I’ve owned SanDisk products for many years, but I am underwhelmed by this particular drive. The cable comes in two pieces, using a USB 3.1 adapter, and within just a few months of occasional use, it got to that point where the cable has to be in just the right position for the computer to recognize that it’s attached. Lose that position in the midst of transferring or editing files, and you’re sunk. Though I will continue to use the drive for a spare safe storage copy, due to the cable issue, and all of my computers requiring the use of the adapter, it is not usable as a true fully functional portable drive that I can carry around for use with the various laptops and desktops in my life. I will be investing in a second drive for those purposes, and will be avoiding SanDisk this time around. Sandisk would have been better served to include two separate one-piece cables rather than the cable / adapter that comes with this. Yes, I could buy a separate one-piece cable on my own, but since I’m not 100% sure which connection it is that is wonky, I’m inclined to give something else a try instead.

super fast for data transfer, rugged build and highly portable. love it.

I see no performance difference while editing between working off of this unit vs. working off my internal SSD.

One of the reasons I bought this was to get rid of my spindle drive external disk which was draining my laptop battery. The issue is better but not great. Before I would get about 2hours battery time while editing photos now I get about 4hrs. But, because this is much faster I can get more done without having to wait for saving the files especially when they reach 1GB. The drive is very light and 1/4th the size of my previous drive

Haven’t had any issues so far, works quick. It’s also very compact and can be carried in some nook in your bag everyday if you need to taking up almost no space, and weighing almost nothing.

Could ask for a better portable SSD. Both the physical and storage size are perfect!

This is a great, compact, fast little drive that I can take anywhere. I’ve even edited a 3 minute wedding video on Premiere Pro, working straight off of this drive, which was pretty great! My only frustration with it is that it disconnects very easily sometimes when I slightly bump it. And then when I try and connect it again immediately afterwards, it has trouble mounting back up onto my computer. Sometimes I’ll have to restart my computer for it to mount back up again. Maybe it’s a problem with the short cable that comes with it, I don’t know. But this issue can definitely be a frustration when I’m trying to get work done. Other than that little issue, this is a great drive and I can see myself buying another one in the future if it goes on sale again.

rubberized back and sides for enhanced grip and shock absorption. not sure what the little opening is for but I guess you could attach a carabiner or something.

I used it with my BMD Pro Mini Atem iso; copying footage was never so easy!!

Previously we bought a 475 or 500 GB version of this. Works well! After our non-SSD external portable hard drive failed, causing us to lose pics/videos, we learned of the SSD version and will NEVER go back to using a non-SSD external hard drive again! Too smart, too late.

Very light weight. Great speed for your USB 3 ports. Not sluggish on USB 2 ports, either. Does not get very warm, even under sustained transfers. B&H had it in stock and 2-day delivery was excellent.
