Designed for saving and editing high-resolution photos and videos, the 500GB Extreme Portable USB 3.1 Type-C External SSD from SanDisk provides users with up to 500GB of storage for their creative content work, as well as a 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Type-C interface, which is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2 and delivers read speeds of up to 550 MB/s. Additionally, this SSD is IP-55 rated and features resistance against water, dust, and shock. It can withstand a water flow of up to 30 kPA for 3 minutes, 1500 g of shock, and 5 gRMS of vibration @ 10-2000 Hz. It can also withstand drops of up to 6.5′ on a concrete floor and temperature extremes, with operating temperatures ranging from 32 to 113°F and storage temperatures ranging from -4 to 158°F.
Compact and pocket-sized, SanDisk has preformatted this SSD as exFAT, meaning it is ready for immediate plug-and-play use with both Windows 10, 8.1 and 7, plus macOS High Sierra, Sierra, and El Capitan without the need for any special drivers or reformatting. Thanks to SanDisk SecureAccess 128-bit AES encryption, private files can be password-protected. Included is a USB Type-C to Type-C cable and a USB Type-C to Type-A adapter. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

I bought this to be a back-up disc for my MacBook Pro. It works flawlessly with the Time Capsule software and given that it is SSD storage, the back-up took about 10 minutes vrs. with my old Time Capsule over wi-fi, about 10 hours! A big improvement.

I got this 2TB SSD to back up some video files on my laptop and desktop computers. First I created a file for the desktop and copied about 500GB from the desktop. All appeared to go well. I was able see the files and view the videos. Then I hooked it up to my laptop….and the files from my desktop were gone…..sort of. I couldn’t see the files but the 500GB was still subtracted from the remaining space on the drive! I reformatted the drive but since both computers are Windows, I used NTFS format. I then recopied all of the desktop files as well as the laptop files…..and all is well.

I’m an hobbyist photographer and I purchased this SSD to house a copy of my photo collection to be given to a family member who requested a copy. I was not looking forward to moving 600MB worth of data from my home back-up source to a new drive. A quick edit of what was to be copied took much longer than the transfer itself. This is the first time I have taken notice of the rapidity of data transfers amongst USB 3.1 devices and I’m impressed. This device is small, rugged and very fast.

This little device was exactly what I needed to store my images on and free up space on my laptop. I can quickly move images from my laptop to this drive and do any post processing as simply as if I was working directly from files on my laptop. My only negative on this is the connecting cable supplied with the drive. The adapter needed for A type to C type USB does not connect as tightly as I hoped, and an aftermarket cable will serve you better. Other than that, this was a great purchase!

The drive is fast using the USB 3.1 type C connector and is small in size. I use it to back up large numbers of photographs on my laptop which are typically 60 MB to 300 MB each and it completes the job quickly. More of these will be on my shopping list.

This is a tiny unit that records blazingly fast, quick access to your files, produces no heat (no moving parts) and is reasonably priced. Might buy an internal one, too, when the price drops. I purchased this SSD drive to test out video editing on Final Cut Pro X. Wanted to take some strain off of my 6 GB G drive, I have been using it for about 3 months with no issues. Not editing multi-cam or 4 K yet, but it has worked just fine with 1920 X 1080 video files. No speed or rendering issues.

I purchased a SanDisk 1TB to unclog my computer. The data transfer was so fast and so efficient that I purchased another one within days. I realized the following drawback too late: I look at it sideways and it gets ejected from the desktop. The connection is so unstable that I have to pay super attention to how I lays it on my desk. I should have paid more heed to a similar recent review from a user before my purchases. This might have caused me to research other alternatives more deeply.
